Michael cleaned his gun like every morning after eating his breakfast. Well, if eating stale bread and sipping on disgusting coffee could be called breakfast.

He regretted his thoughts immediately as he remembered all of his fellow soldiers that didn't wake up that day and would give anything to eat the bread he was eating.

"Clifford," General shouted, and Michael quickly stood up and grabbed his gun just in case. He knew he should always be ready.

"You called me, sir?"

The older man looked up and nodded before grabbing a letter from his table. "I didn't know that when cornel Andrew Hemmings asked me to make his son some favors that would extend to you as well."

Michael blushed and looked down at his dirty hands.

"Hey," The man added softly, making Michael look up. "It's fine, it was a joke. I don't mind it and I don't care about whatever you two have. You caring for him that much saved his life. And every soldier's life in my unit is precious to me."

Michael took the offered letter before he thanked his General and asked if he needed anything else.

"I need this war to end," He sighed, and Michael couldn't agree more. "And before you ask, Hemmings is doing well in the hospital. You saved his life and you should be proud."

He was proud, it was one of the few things Michael was proud of in his life.

"I'll go and see how the boys are doing and you can read your letter here."

Michael was incredibly grateful and thanked the man again. He knew it from first-hand how different some Colonels and Generals were to their soldiers.

The moment Michael was alone he carefully opened the envelope and already had tears in his eyes as he read the familiar handwriting.

Dear Michael,

I am not sure how to start this. I miss you greatly.

I wake up every morning and fall asleep every night with you on my mind. You're not only the reason I am alive but also the reason I keep going.

I stood up on my own for the first time yesterday after four months and I did it for you.

Enough about me.

I hope you are well. I hear this war is about to end soon and there's nothing I wish for more than for you to return to me as soon as possible. When it ends, I want you to come and find me, I know you told me you don't have a home, but you do. You saved my life and my family will be more than grateful to accept you. They accept us and our love.

I love you.

There are a lot of 'I-s' in this and I feel selfish, but these are all my thoughts gathered onto a piece of paper.
