Michael was carefully observing Luke mixing his virgin cocktail with a straw. The younger boy was looking at the menu for a good five minutes and from what Michael could see he was deciding on which type of pasta he should get.
He was so pretty Michael couldn't believe he asked him on a date. Luke Hemmings, the most popular and beautiful boy asked him, Michael Clifford, the loner, on a date. Michael still wasn't that sure if it was maybe a prank or not but his friend Calum assured him that yes, Luke has set a record at how many boys from school he already dated but that he's also incredibly nice and kind.
Finally, Luke looked up and smiled at Michael. "What are you having? I seriously want some gnocchi with gorgonzola but probably shouldn't eat that many carbs."
Michael frowned for a second before taking the menu from Luke's hands and waved at the waiter. "Carbs are always a good idea."
When the waiter came he ordered Luke his gnocchi and himself some spaghetti.
"You invited me to an Italian restaurant so the only answer is carbs."
Luke giggled at what Michael said and that made the older boy blush easily. "You're funny."
And wow, if Luke thought Michael's 'joke' was funny he couldn't imagine how many unfunny boys Luke dated.
"Can I ask you something?" Michael looked at Luke who looked so happy Michael was actually speaking up. He was shy and awkward and he really hoped that wouldn't scare Luke away.
"Of course."
"Why did you ask me out? I don't want to be mean or anything but I don't want to be an experiment or something for you. You normally date the popular guys not outcasts like me."
Luke took another sip of his drink before looking Michael in the eyes. "There's no secret that it's impossible for me to be alone. I like being with people and I hate being alone. Now what you said is somehow correct but I actually never had a proper boyfriend, the number of guys I hang out with for a romantic interest also isn't that high because believe it or not there are not that many not straight boys in the school."
Michael blushed and looked down. "I'm sorry."
"Don't be." Luke smiled. "I know what rumours are going around the school and if I'd mind or care for them I'd stop them already. Now if we talk about you Michael, I asked you out because you've been my crush for years."
Michael looked back up in complete surprise. "Me?"
Luke giggled and shook his head before he reached over to grab Michael's hand.
"Yes, you. I remember when we were twelve and you looked so beautiful that I had to tell my mum about you. That's how I realized that I like boys. We were never in the same circle of friends and I only found out a couple of months ago you were bi when I saw your profile on a dating app. I swiped right in less than a second and waited for you to maybe do the same so we could talk. But you never did."
The older boy kept staring at their tangled hands.
"Calum made that profile for me. I never used it."
"I then tried to get your intention in school, I flirted with you, I even left you notes in your locker. Then I decided to go and ask you on a date and if you'd say no then I'd leave you alone."
"I'm sorry." Michael apologized again. "I'm not that good at reading signals, you can imagine I don't get a lot of attention."
Luke shook his head. "Ever since I asked you on a date I got death glares and someone even messaged me on Tumblr that I don't deserve you."
Michael frowned but stopped and looked at Luke when he squeezed his hand.
"The point is Michael that I really like you. I know you're not that talkative and that you're shy and I don't want you to feel pressured into anything. We can talk about anything, don't be afraid to share your interests with me. I say we go on a couple of dates, if you want to of course and then see if we should take this any further."
Luke carefully observed Michael but calmed down when he saw the beautiful smile that he fell for.
"Okay."
That made Luke smile as well.
"I really like comics and superhero movies, so we can go to the cinema next week and watch Black Panther?"
Luke nodded. "I'd really like to. Now I think our carbs are coming and I think we both agree that we love carbs."
