warning: angst

Luke Hemmings was many things but not a crier.

His parents and brothers died when he was five, no one from the rest of his family wanted to take care of him so he ended up in an orphanage. There he was treated badly because of his weak physique and the preference to look pretty not manly.

Still, he never cried, never complained because he knew one day he'll get out of here and create something out of himself.

This day wasn't the day.

On the twentieth November of 2013, he was seventeen years, four months, and six days old. Which meant he'll get out of the system in seven months and twenty-four days.

But today was the day when Michael Clifford was getting out of the system.

Luke's best friend, support, protector, and boyfriend.

As the birthday boy packed his stuff, Luke was sitting on his already stripped bed with tears in his eyes.

He knew Michael was ignoring him and it hurt him even more. The curly-haired boy just wanted Michael to stay a bit longer, just so they could get out of here together.

"Do you want to keep this?" Michael held up his only winter hoodie. It was Luke's favorite to wear.

Luke held his knees closer to his chest and shook his head. "You'll be cold without it."

The older boy sighed and threw the hoodie on top of the small pile of stuff he'll take with him. "Babe, please don't make this harder than it already is."

"I just don't understand why you have to leave me."

Michael sat down next to the fragile boy. "You know I can't stay here, I'm eighteen now."

"I know." Luke rolled his eyes. "But you could at least stay near me. You're moving away."

"And in July you'll come too. I told you what my plan was. I got a job in a different city but it's the best I could do. I'll come and see you if I'll have any spare money but I'll write to you all the time and try to save up so I'll have enough money for both of us until you'll find a job."

Michael tried to take Luke's hand but the boy pushed him away.

"I don't want your money, Michael!" He shouted. "I want you."

"Luke, please." Michael could usually calm his boy down but not today.

"You don't get it, do you?" Tears were falling down his cheeks. "Everybody left me and now you're leaving too."

"I don't know why you're seeing it this way," Michael whispered. "But I'm doing this for both of us. Because I love you."

Luke pushed him away again but this time he stood up and moved towards the door. "If this is how you show love, I don't want any."

Michael looked broken but Luke just wanted him to feel as bad as he did.

"Lukey..."

Before he could stop him, Luke left the room and went to his hiding spot so even his boyfriend couldn't find him.

He stayed there for hours but continued to cry. After a while, he fell asleep and when he woke up Luke realized he didn't even give Michael his gift before he left.

Luke ran down the stairs to his and Michael's room but was too late.

Michael was already gone.

On Luke's bed, there was his boyfriend's hoodie with a note on top of it.

I still want your love even if you don't want mine. - Love you. Michael.

2020 note: I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M EDITING THIS ON MICHAEL'S BIRTHDAY

Thoughts on the 'angst'?

The storyline?

Michael 'leaving' Luke? Luke's reaction?
