"Mikey?"
Michael pulled his shoes on and walked over to his little sister. "Yes, Alix?"
"Are you excited about Valentine's day?" She had the biggest smile on her face. He wasn't sure if it was because her favorite babysitter was coming or because the Cupids will be in the air tonight.
Literally.
At the age of eighteen, Michael was one of the only people he knew left without a significant other. His mother said it was because he had spent all of the previous Valentine's days inside or his Cupid was just as lazy as he was.
Either way, this year Michael had no excuses. He only had one morning class and was ordered (yes ordered) by his mum to come straight home, eat, get changed, and go out.
Michael's first excuse like always was that he had to babysit Alix. However, his sister called her babysitter alone to ask them to watch over her.
"Can I tell you a little secret?" He fixed her dress.
Alix nodded and leaned forward so Michael could whisper into her ear. "I'm not sure I'm ready to be in love."
"That's silly." She smiled. "You love me, right?"
Michael nodded but wanted to roll his eyes. His sister was being silly too.
"And you didn't have to be ready for loving me. When the Cupid will shoot his arrow today or the year or the next, you'll be ready."
There was a smile on his face that couldn't be erased. "When did you get so smart?"
Michael kissed her cheek and was out of the house the moment his mum parked her car on the driveway. He didn't need any more wise words from the female part of his family.
He also hoped that when he'd come home his parent would already be home from their date and asleep.
One thing Michael never realized was how small Cupids were. Little clouds in a frown of angels were flying around the town and shooting their arrows at people when they first looked at each other that day. It was Valentine's day, after all, the day of love and the day people who are meant to be together forever got united.
It made Michael happy seeing other people happy and in love. He just wasn't sure if that was for him. Maybe Alix was right, maybe since he wasn't ready it just wasn't his year.
Also, he had no idea what to do for the entire day outside. He did bring his Gameboy with him in case of an emergency.
Michael quickly realized that there weren't many activities to do alone on this day. He went to the cinema but before the movie even started playing, he realized he was the only person who came alone.
It wasn't even getting dark outside when he decided he had enough. Today wasn't the day, this year wasn't the year. He'd much rather spend the day with his sister than strolling around the city.
He did buy her a balloon and a bouquet of lollipops as she'll be his Valentine this year.
"Alix, I'm home!" He shouted and walked into their house.
There was a lot of giggling and laughter heard which came from their living room.
His little sister was holding lipstick in her hand and was turning someone into a princess. Michael knew the process, he got the makeover at least once per month.
"Mikey!" Alix laughed. "Look at nanny Luke, isn't he the prettiest princess?"
The blonde boy shyly smiled and waved at him and Michael only nodded with an open mouth.
Then, all of the sudden something blew up and scared all three of them.
Michael looked up and saw a little sad Cupid looking down on the floor. The balloon Michael got for Alix was blown up into pieces.
"I-I..." Michael had no voice. "I think you missed." He told the little angel who shot two more arrows.
One at Michael and the other at nanny Luke.
Like he was in trance Michael walked over and passes the bouquet to his sister while keeping his gaze on the beautiful, beautiful boy.
"The prettiest princess," Michael mumbled and the way Luke smiled at him made him know he was ready.
"You have to kiss now." Alix interrupted. "It's what boyfriends do."
Michael blushed so hard the color of his cheeks almost matched Luke's but the boy had red lipstick all over his face. Luke did stand up and he was tall and so pretty.
He did lean forward but Alix pushed him away. "On his cheek, you silly. That's how you always show me you love me."
Both boys started laughing, leaving the poor girl confused.
Michael did kiss Luke on his cheek that day.
But the next day he kissed his lips.
And the next, and the next, and the next.
