Luke was a smart penguin and the youngest of three brothers so he always got what he wanted.

Luke really wanted Michael.

Michael was the coolest penguin he knew and they've been best friends since they were little chicks. He was the fastest, most brave, and the most handsome penguin.

Luke could not understand why should he fall in love with a female when males were oh so pretty. Especially Michael.

Now the problem was Michael had a lot of suitors. Mostly female but Luke had some boys to compete with too. The older penguin wouldn't have to try hard to find a lifelong partner but Luke just really wanted that to be him.

To his advantage, he liked Luke the most.

He thought he was cute and funny and he'd always try and hold his wing when it was cold and they'd all squeeze together. Michael also liked to nap with Luke because he was very observant and the older animal knew he'd be safe around him.

It was clearly a match made in heaven but there was one thing Luke couldn't give Michael.

More little chicks.

Michael talked about being a parent every since his cousin got her own little one.

He wanted to sit on the egg and protect it and then when a little baby would come out teach it everything he knew.

And Luke really wanted that too, a family who'd love him, kids to protect, and penguin to grow old with.

The smart penguin he was, Luke made a plan. It wasn't an overnight thing. First, he had to make sure Michael was always close to him so no one could woo him away. The younger penguin was also flirting with Michael a lot more which resulted in a very happy penguin.

The second part was getting the egg. He wasn't silly, he knew neither he nor Michael could make eggs but there were a lot of penguins who could and didn't deserve to have them. On a beach nearby there was a couple who year after year got more chicks but didn't take care of them at all. After a month or two, there'd be a penguin couple who'd adopt the unwanted babies. Luke knew he could love the baby more than they ever would.

It was a waiting game but neither was bored because Luke's wooing never stopped and Michael was clearly falling for him too.

He even got jealous when a female penguin tried to hold Luke's wing.

When the day finally came Luke went to the beach, he spent hours observing. As presumed, less than an hour after being hatched the egg was not only unguarded but wasn't even in a nest. That meant it could freeze before the chick would be born.

At this point, he didn't even care if anyone saw him, he just went for it. Luke put the egg on top of his feet and waddled towards his own beach.

He made the prettiest nest for the egg and first wanted to make sure it was warm before he'd show it to Michael.

Luke loved the egg and the baby in it so much already, he was going to keep it even if Michael would say no to him.

Just as he wanted to leave the egg to get him, he heard his favorite penguin call his name.

Michael looked happy and that made Luke more confident.

"I have something for you." He chirped.

Luke carefully observed as Michael dropped something he was holding with his beak on the floor.

When he moved away Luke noticed it was the prettiest and smoothest pebble he has ever seen. He almost stopped breathing because that only meant one thing.

"Do you like it?"

Instead of answering, because he couldn't even move his beak, Luke moved so Michael could see behind him.

"I got you something too."

Michael looked confused but then Luke took the pebble and placed it into his nest next to the egg.

When he turned around Michael was already next to him, rubbing the side of his head to Luke's and held his wing.

"You did this for me?"

Luke watched with complete awe and adoration as Michael carefully placed the egg on top of his feet.

"I did it for us." He replied and squeezed next to his new family.
