Chapter 1- The Beginning of the End

Mina sat on her knees, holding Chibs's hand against her lips. "Please, wake up," she cried. "Please, wake up. Please, wake up!" Deep down, she knew he was gone and wasn't going to wake up. But, she continued to beg him to open his eyes, repeating those words over and over again. Setting his hand down gently on the bed, she rested her forehead on his knuckles. Mina closed her eyes, taking a deep breath to stop herself from crying. She whispered, "Please," as her final plea to whoever was watching over him and dragging him away from her.

Tig had promised Chibs that he would take care of Mina and Cait if something happened to him, but he never thought it would actually happen. He stood in shock, watching Mina grasp onto her dead husband, slowly breaking his heart. Reaching down, he put his hand on her shoulder and was going to make an attempt to bring her out of the room.

She lifted her head when the monitor faintly beeped, making both of them jump. She had felt his hand twitch but thought she was imagining things. Mina stared at the slow line peak, letting out a beep.

Looking over at Chibs, she didn't know what was real anymore. Not until she saw his eyes slowly open. "Mina," he whispered, so quietly it was hardly audible.

Mina smiled down at him, standing from her knees. "Go get the doctor!" she yelled at Tig who was already out the door. Pushing his hair off his face, Mina whispered, "I'm right here. It's gonna be okay. You're gonna be fine."

Chibs nodded, closing his eyes and turning his head to the side. She was worried, but as long as the monitor kept beeping, she knew he was fine. Doctors and nurses came rushing in, trying to figure out the best way to treat him. Tig pulled Mina into a hug as she cried joyful tears for the first time all day.

After a month in the hospital, Chibs was allowed to go home. It was hard for him to take it easy. All he wanted to do was get back to his regular way of life, but Mina wouldn't let him. She kept him either on the couch or in bed. He wasn't allowed to do anything.

The thing he wanted most was a cigarette. Arguments had come out of that want between him and Mina. "You have half of a lung working right now. You're not smoking," Mina said, pointing down at him.

"Well, I need somethin'," he sighed. "Run to the store and ge' those patches, will ya?"

"I'm not leaving you here alone," she snapped. The last time she did, Chibs got into the cigarettes and whiskey she had hidden and was about to leave on his bike. "See if Tig'll go for you."

Chibs shook his head, "Nah, I'll jus' go." Putting her hands on his shoulders, she pinned him on the couch. "Darlin', I'm goin'," he said as he looked up at her.

She let go of him and said, "Fine." Walking into the kitchen, she watched Chibs try to get up off the couch. "You okay?" she asked as he just leaned back again.

"Think I'm jus' gonna stay here," he sighed, trying not to let Mina know that she won. He could barely breathe as he tried to hide the pain from her. Mina could see what he was doing and walked over to him. She wrapped her arms around his neck, leaning over the back of the couch. "What're ye doin'?" he asked, reaching up and grabbing her hand.

Mina smiled, kissing his cheek, and sighed, "I'll go to the store. Keep an eye on Cait." He turned around to face her and she lightly kissed him. "Just behave."
