Tones of Home - Blind Melon

-----

Chibs brought Mina back to her house around midnight. No longer screaming on each turn, Mina held on to his waist a little looser. She rested the side of her head on his shoulder, watching the world go by as they rode.

When they got to her house, she didn't want to let go of him. But, she had to. Getting off, she took the helmet off her head and handed it to him. He got off, carefully placing it back in the saddlebag. Walking on to the porch, she dug in her pocket for her house key and opened the door. The cat jumped off the counter with a thud as she heard the door open.

She turned around, looking up at him. "Do you want to come in for a cup of coffee or something?"

He laughed, pushing a piece of her hair behind her ear. "No," he sighed, "It's late and you have school tomorrow." She rested her head on his hand. "Raincheck."

She smiled and he leaned down, giving her a slow, soft kiss. When he pulled away, she whispered, "Good night."

"Good night, love." He kissed her forehead and walked over to his bike.

Mina stood in the doorway and watched as he got on, backed out of the driveway, and rode down the street.

She walked inside and kicked her shoes off. All she wanted was for Chibs to be there with her. To stand next to her, to hug her, to kiss her with his surprisingly soft lips. But, instead, he left so she could sleep and be ready for work the next day. Or, maybe he wanted to sleep. It had been a long two days for him.

She pulled her hair into a bun after putting her pajamas on. Mina couldn't stop thinking about Chibs, so she turned on the TV. Wondering what Chibs was doing, she looked at her phone.

She texted him: Did you get home okay?

Chibs walked in the front door and laid down on the couch. He was so tired, he wasn't going to bother going to the bed. Closing his eyes, he sunk further into the couch. His phone buzzed in his pocket, vibrating against his thigh.

He reached down and pulled out the flip phone. Laughing at her message, he wrote: Aye got home a few minutes ago.

Mina smiled and wrote: What're you doing tomorrow night?

Chibs chuckled. Nothing yet. Why? Are you asking me out on a date?

She laughed and waited to respond, trying to think of the best thing to say. She wrote: If you play your cards right.

He responded: Well, how do I make sure to play them right?

She smiled:  I think you know how to. My house. Tomorrow at 8.

Mina bit her lower lip, waiting for him to respond. When her phone lit up, she smiled at his message: Yes, ma'am.

The next morning, Mina did not want to get out of bed. It was so cold, she didn't want to put her feet on the floor. When the clock hit six, she groaned and got out of bed. She took a fast shower, not washing her hair because she was already late.

Driving to the school, she saw a box truck labeled UNSER TRUCKING drive past her with Harleys behind it. When she saw Chibs ride by next to Jax, she couldn't help but smile. She wondered what was in the truck as she continued to the high school.

It was a beautiful Friday morning. The sun giving the sky warm tones of home. Mina smiled, looking at the sun elevated over the mountains where she was the night before with Chibs. Where she and Chibs spent their closest moment, hopefully, the first of many more.
