- We've tried everything... -
"SHE-BEAN!" I hear Tyrell's voice call out loudly from the other side of my door, followed by a second voice.
"You sure this is alright?" Thomas asks, and I groan in frustration.
"Go away," I mumble, burying my head deeper into my pillows. My body feels heavy, not quite ready to face the day.
"Yup," I hear Tyrell say in an exaggerated tone before the door creaks open. "God..." he mutters as the sunlight pours in, causing me to squint and groan even louder, instinctively pulling the covers over my head.
"As you can see, she's not much of a morning person," Tyrell explains to Thomas, clearly amused, as he steps into my hut. The light streaming in only makes me more annoyed, but I don't move. "Come on, Y/n, you need to get up before the others eat all the eggs and bacon," Tyrell adds, his voice now right beside my bed, more forceful.
"Fine..." I groan, sitting up reluctantly, and blinking the sleep out of my eyes. My hair is a mess, and I feel like a zombie on the verge of collapsing back into my blankets.
"Oh, would you look at that, she lives!" Theo's voice echoes from the doorway, followed by his smug grin. I roll my eyes, already dreading the teasing. "Shut up," I mutter as I grab my pillow and throw it at him, but of course, he catches it with ease and hurls it back at me. It hits me right in the face, making me yelp in surprise.
"Ow!" I say, rubbing my nose dramatically.
"Sorry, not sorry," Theo smirks, backing up as he heads off toward the others. "Now, come on up," Tyrell says, tugging on my arm and pulling me to my feet. I sigh in frustration, but there's no point in fighting it.
"Alright, alright," I grumble, "But just give me some privacy so I can change." I push them both out of my hut, the door closing with a thud behind them. I can hear Tyrell and Thomas chatting outside as I make my way over to the dresser.
I pick out a pair of green shorts and a black tank top, quickly changing into them before pulling on my tan combat boots. I tie my hair up into a ponytail, checking myself in the small mirror by the dresser, giving myself a quick once-over. "Alright, I'm ready to go," I say as I walk out of my hut.
"About time," Tyrell mutters from outside, his tone amused. I roll my eyes, pushing past him without saying anything, and head toward the eating area.
--- After breakfast ---
The sun is high now, and the heat from the morning is starting to settle in. I walk up to the garden, where Newt and a few of the others are working on the plants. I see Thomas there too, looking around with a mixture of curiosity and frustration.
"Has anyone tried climbing to the top?" Thomas asks, his voice filled with genuine curiosity.
"I tried it," Newt responds casually, wiping the sweat from his brow as he continues working on the plants. I walk up beside him and smile, enjoying the rare quiet moment.
"Hey, Lizard," Newt greets me with a small smile, before turning back to Thomas, who's looking over the ivy that's winding up the wall.
"The ivy doesn't go all the way to the top," Newt explains, gesturing to the plants. "And besides, where are you gonna go from there?" he adds, his voice light but matter-of-fact. I lean back against the wooden stakes holding up the plants, crossing my arms over my chest.
"Yeah, well, what about the Box?" Thomas presses on, clearly not ready to give up. "You know, next time it comes up, you just jump—"
"No, we tried that," Newt interrupts, cutting him off. His tone is firm. "The Box won't go back down with someone in it."
"Okay, well, what if we—?" Thomas starts again, but Newt interrupts him once more.
"No, we tried it, alright?" Newt says, clearly growing tired of the back-and-forth. He steps over to the pile of plant stakes, pulling one out and leaning on it. "Twice, alright? Trust me, anything that you think of, we've already tried." His voice softens a little, but his frustration is still evident. "We should be focusing on finding a way out of here, not trying to climb things," he adds, shaking his head slightly.
"And the only way out of here is through the Maze," Newt adds, turning to look at me as if to reinforce the point. I sigh and roll my eyes slightly, shifting my weight from one foot to the other.
"Now, look, you wanna be helpful?" Newt asks, suddenly bending down beside me to grab a basket. He throws it at Thomas, who just barely catches it. "Here, go dig us up some more fertilizer," Newt says, his voice teasing but still authoritative.
Before Thomas can protest, Newt slips an arm around my shoulders, leaning on me for a second. I feel a small smile form on my lips, watching as Thomas awkwardly stumbles forward, nearly tripping over a stick holding up a plant. I can't help but giggle at his clumsiness.
"Alright, I better get back to work," Newt says, pulling his arm off me and walking toward the plants again. "See ya later then," I call after him, watching him wave over his shoulder.
I turn around and make my way back toward the stables, wondering how Tyrell is doing with his work. The day stretches out before me, full of tasks and responsibilities, but for now, I enjoy the brief pause in the chaos.
