Lin Ran continued to accelerate, leaving the zombies fifteen or sixteen steps behind. The cool summer breeze brushed past as she sped up, feeling exhilarated. She had taken her first step toward surviving the apocalypse, and she understood how the card-drawing system worked, boosting her confidence.
The motorcycle roared as it sped along. Twenty minutes later, Lin Ran saw the gates of the Guanghua residential area. She smiled but remained cautious, carefully maneuvering the bike. The zombies were now twenty to thirty meters behind.
Driving into the residential area, she knocked over two zombies. With a swift drift, she sent two more flying with the bike's rear, leaving a perfect arc before speeding toward Building 9.
A few seconds later, Lin Ran stopped the motorcycle at the entrance of Building 9, supporting it with one foot.
She patted Mo Shuyu's hand on her waist. "Dr. Mo, we're here. Get off and open all the building doors for me, quickly."
"Okay." Mo Shuyu released her grip on Lin Ran's waist, placed her hands on Lin Ran's sides, and balanced herself with one leg on the ground before swiftly dismounting the heavy motorcycle with the other leg.
She ran to open the building door, then moved inside to clear the hallway for Lin Ran.
Fortunately, the building entrance was large enough. Lin Ran revved the engine and rode the motorcycle into the building, disappearing from view. She turned off the engine and quickly got off the motorcycle, which vanished into thin air.
Not taking any chances, Lin Ran grabbed Mo Shuyu's wrist and led her through a white door into the emergency staircase. Lin Ran chose to climb the stairs, the safest option in an apocalypse. Although the power in Jiangbei City was still functioning, it could go out at any moment, and elevators could break down without anyone to repair them.
The staircase was free of zombies, but they could hear rustling noises outside, likely from the zombies that had chased the motorcycle.
Lin Ran released Mo Shuyu's wrist and, with a thought, conjured a Tang sword in her right hand and a kukri in her left. She handed the kukri to Mo Shuyu, gave her a meaningful look, and then silently began going up the stairs, holding the Tang sword.
Mo Shuyu understood immediately and quietly followed Lin Ran up the stairs.
Lin Ran had already cleared most of the zombies in Building 9 the previous day, so she wasn't too worried about encountering many zombies in the stairwell, though caution was still necessary.
The stairwell was filled with the smell of decay, worsened by the heat of June. Some of the zombies Lin Ran had killed yesterday were decomposing, emitting a nauseating stench mixed with the odor of rotting flesh. White maggots swarmed over the corpses, making the sight and smell almost unbearable.
Although Mo Shuyu had grown somewhat accustomed to zombies, the sight of the maggots made her shudder. Instinctively, she clutched the hem of Lin Ran's vest.
Lin Ran turned to look at Mo Shuyu and whispered, "It's normal. The heat and the stench attract maggots. Just bear with it; we'll be home soon."
Mo Shuyu nodded and released her grip on Lin Ran's vest.
"Watch your step. These maggots may be ordinary, but they're unhygienic. Try not to step on them. Stay close to me." Lin Ran cautioned Mo Shuyu as they continued up the stairs.
"Okay." Mo Shuyu was determined to endure the disgusting sight, longing to see her mother and Softie. She bit her lip and followed Lin Ran closely.
They reached the sixth floor without encountering any zombies. However, at the turn between the sixth and seventh floors, they came face to face with an old female zombie, its eyes rolled back, devoid of any human consciousness.
