But it was just a fleeting thought. Lin Ran quickly regained her composure; now was not the time to give up.
Using all her strength, Lin Ran pushed the zombie's head upwards until she heard a crack. The male zombie's spine broke. At the same time, she swung her knife furiously at the nearby zombies.
Without hesitation, Lin Ran grabbed the male zombie with the broken spine, using it as a shield while slashing her way towards Mo Shuyu.
Lin Ran positioned the male zombie behind Mo Shuyu, kicking another male zombie in front of her. Mo Shuyu finally got a moment to catch her breath, but her hands were in pain and exhausted. Meanwhile, more zombies charged at them from both sides.
At this critical moment, a woman next to the card-drawing machine started making noise by hitting a chair with a baseball bat, producing loud "bang bang bang" sounds, even louder than the commotion Lin Ran and Mo Shuyu were making.
The woman's companion, alarmed by the noise, rushed to stop her. "Are you crazy? You'll attract all those monsters!"
The woman shook off the man's hand and looked towards Lin Ran and Mo Shuyu. "Didn't you notice? These zombies won't come near this circle. If we don't help, those two outside will die."
"Let them die, what does it matter to us? Now's not the time for your savior complex!" the man retorted, trying to grab the bat from her.
"You don't understand. That woman with the katana is not ordinary; otherwise, they wouldn't have lasted this long." The woman continued banging the chair with the bat, ignoring the man's protests.
Some of the zombies around Lin Ran and Mo Shuyu were drawn by the noise and started moving inward.
Taking advantage of the distraction, Lin Ran kicked and slashed her way forward, creating a path by cutting down zombies, some of which were dismembered. "Follow me," she urged.
Stepping over the fallen zombies, Lin Ran managed to kick a path clear. Without wasting time, she picked up Mo Shuyu and jumped over the zombies into the circle, avoiding their grasp.
As they landed, Lin Ran adjusted her position to cushion Mo Shuyu, preventing her from hitting the ground.
The fall was heavy due to the height and holding another person. Lin Ran gasped in pain as they hit the ground.
"Hiss," she winced, but her hand remained protectively around Mo Shuyu. "Are you okay?" Lin Ran asked.
"I should be asking you that," Mo Shuyu responded, worried that Lin Ran might have injured herself. Her eyes were red with concern. She quickly got up and checked Lin Ran's back. "How are you? Did you hurt your bones? Can you move?"
Lin Ran didn't want to move but didn't think she had broken any bones. "I think I'm okay, just bruised. Let me catch my breath."
Seeing Lin Ran seemingly okay, Mo Shuyu sighed in relief. She almost thought she'd be bitten by zombies just moments ago. Mo Shuyu thanked the woman with the baseball bat, "Thank you for distracting the zombies. Without your help, we wouldn't have made it."
"No problem. We need to help each other in times like these. Does your friend need any assistance?" The woman, named Yang Jing, was a project manager at Maoting Group.
"No, thank you," Mo Shuyu replied before turning back to Lin Ran. "How are you feeling? Can you get up?"
Lin Ran smiled at Mo Shuyu, shaking her head slightly, still lying on the ground.
Mo Shuyu, worried that Lin Ran might have hurt herself badly, touched her forehead. "Why are you smiling? Does it hurt?"
"It's fine, just a bit painful, but we’re lucky nothing serious happened. We're still alive," Lin Ran reassured her, taking deep breaths and feeling relieved seeing Mo Shuyu unharmed.
