Lin Ran and Mo Shuyu got off the motorcycle, and Lin Ran looked at the three-story building in the service area. "You all wait here for a moment. I'll go clear out the zombies inside.""I'll go with you," Mo Shuyu said, grabbing her machete and following along.
There weren't many zombies in the open area of the service station. Lin Ran stood at the front door on the first floor, reaching out to push it, but it wouldn't budge, as if something was blocking it from the inside.
Lin Ran took a step back and then forcefully kicked the door open, sending whatever was blocking it inside tumbling to the ground.
She shone her flashlight inside and saw about a dozen people—men and women—staring at her in terror.
"We're not zombies, just passing through and looking for a place to stay for the night," Lin Ran said, shining the flashlight around the room.
"No way! Who knows who you really are? This is our place, and we don't welcome outsiders," a man with glasses said coldly.
"Sorry, but we have to stay here tonight. Don't worry, we won't touch anything. We just need to rest here," Lin Ran responded, understanding that these people had probably been living in the small building for a while and didn't want to be disturbed.
"I said we don't welcome outsiders. We don't want to be bothered," the man with glasses insisted, his gaze still wary as he raised the knife in his hand.
Lin Ran, exhausted from riding the motorcycle all afternoon, didn't want to argue. Her expression turned cold. "I don't want to fight you. Don't push me."
"You're just two people. Even if you fight, you won't gain anything," said a man in his fifties, looking at Lin Ran.
With a thought, Lin Ran conjured a handgun in her hand and pointed it at the ceiling. The loud bang of the gunshot was followed by screams from the people across the room.
"She has a gun!"
"What do we do? What do we do?"
"I'm warning you, don't do anything rash," the man with glasses stammered, now clearly frightened by the sight of the gun.
Lin Ran's eyes swept over the group. "If I really wanted to harm you, I wouldn't have aimed at the ceiling. We're just here to rest for the night and will leave in the morning. There's no need to make a big deal out of it."
"Right, right, there's no need."
"Brother Chen, why don't we just let them stay? They're only here for one night and then they'll leave."
"Yeah, no need to make things difficult."
Hearing everyone agree, Chen Yan realized he had no choice but to agree, especially since the other side had a gun. "Fine, you can stay on your side, just don't cross over to ours."
Lin Ran nodded. "No problem."
Seeing that the situation was settled, Mo Shuyu suggested they all head inside.
Cheng Yanhong carried the little one while Tangyuan and Naiyou had grown to the size of lions, guarding Cheng Yanhong and the child.
Ding Tong and Wei Qingshuo, along with Mo Shuyu, started moving items from the car's trunk into the small building.
By this time, it was almost dark. Lin Ran turned on an emergency light and hung it on an empty shelf nearby.
The first floor seemed to have been cleared out by the other group, with their supplies likely stored elsewhere.
However, Lin Ran and her group were not short on supplies. Sleeping outside was unsafe; it felt much more secure to sleep indoors. At least in case of danger, the walls would provide some protection. Also, if the military tried to track her and Mo Shuyu using satellite positioning, they could only see that there were several people, not necessarily identifying Lin Ran and Mo Shuyu specifically. The more people there were, the less likely it would be for the military to notice them.
