It was past 6 p.m. when Lin Ran and the others passed by a small village and exited the highway. They drove into the village.

The village was made up mostly of small, single-story houses, and the sound of Lin Ran's motorcycle was loud enough to attract all the nearby zombies. After getting off the bike, Lin Ran used her tang blade to clear away the zombies, while the two mutant cats chased down the remaining ones.

Lin Ran glanced around the village and said, "Follow me in the car. Let's find a place to settle down."

"Got it," Ding Tong responded, driving behind Lin Ran and Mo Shuyu.

The village was quite old, and Lin Ran wanted to find a clean house since they planned to stay for a while. After checking several houses, none seemed satisfactory, until they finally settled on a newly built two-story house.

Lin Ran sent the two cats inside to clear out any zombies, while she and Mo Shuyu followed closely behind. Soon, a few zombie corpses were piled up in the courtyard.

Lin Ran pulled out the motorcycle and used her mechanical arm to toss all the zombie corpses outside the yard. Once the area was cleared, she told everyone to quickly enter.

The house had a large courtyard, and Ding Tong tried driving their vehicle inside. Once she parked, Ding Tong got out.

Lin Ran then locked the courtyard gate from the inside and climbed the outside stairs to the roof of the two-story house. From there, she saw a few remaining zombies wandering in the village. It didn't seem like any humans were living there.

By the time Lin Ran came back down, Mo Shuyu and the others had already entered the house. The interior was clean, with light gray floor tiles. The large living room was furnished with a sofa and a wall-mounted television. On the left side of the living room was the bathroom, and on the right was a storage room and kitchen. All the bedrooms were upstairs.

There were four rooms on the second floor: three bedrooms and a study. The master bedroom was connected to an open-air balcony. Other than some dust from being uninhabited for more than two months, the house was quite livable.

"Everyone, let's clean up and rest early tonight. Let Tangyuan and Naigao stand watch, so no one needs to stay up. We've all been too tired lately," Lin Ran said, her own exhaustion evident in her voice.

"Alright, let's clean up a bit. Let's get some water and wipe down the place so it's more comfortable," Wei Qingxue suggested.

Lin Ran nodded and took out a bucket of water from her storage. Everyone went to their respective rooms to change the old bed sheets and covers. Ding Tong took the old linens downstairs and threw them outside the courtyard.

Lin Ran had found a basin and filled it with water. She and Wei Qingxue began wiping down the rooms. Before long, the water in the basin turned completely black. After changing the water and cleaning again, the rooms were much cleaner.

Everyone was exhausted, so for dinner, Lin Ran simply made some porridge with canned luncheon meat. After eating, everyone retired to their rooms for an early night.

Tangyuan stayed in the second-floor living room, while Cheese was guarding the courtyard on the first floor. With the two mutant animals on watch, Lin Ran and the others could finally rest.

After a quick wash, Lin Ran collapsed onto the bed. Mo Shuyu did the same, snuggling into Lin Ran's arms, her gaze lingering on her.

Mo Shuyu moved closer and kissed the corner of Lin Ran's lips. "I'm sorry. I didn't expect my dad to act like that. Did they hurt you when they imprisoned you?"
