Ant and Dec had just wrapped up a long week of filming, and, as usual, they had gone to unwind at Ant's place. The two were scrolling through social media when they stumbled upon a comment that made them both frown.
"Do you think they're a bit too harsh on Stephen sometimes?" one comment read, with replies agreeing, suggesting they were too hard on him during their jokes and pranks. Soon, they found a few YouTube videos compiled from various shows, highlighting every time they'd teased or laughed at Stephen's expense, but out of context, the clips felt a bit mean-spirited. It was enough to make both of them pause.
They exchanged a look. "Do you think... we go too far?" Dec asked quietly.
"Nah, Stephen knows it's all in good fun, right?" Ant replied, but there was a trace of doubt in his voice. Stephen was one of their closest friends, practically family. They knew he understood their humour, but the idea of him doubting their love-even for a second-troubled them both deeply.
A few hours later, Stephen arrived to join them for a quiet night in. Ant and Dec glanced at each other, silently deciding this was the perfect time to set things straight.
They didn't waste a second. The moment Stephen walked through the door, they launched into it, speaking so quickly he barely had time to react.
"Mate, we just wanted to tell you how much you mean to us," Dec started, hands gesturing animatedly. "We saw a few comments online, and it's got us thinking-"
"Yeah, and we want you to know that everything we do, all the teasing, it's just because we love you so much," Ant continued, stepping forward, earnestness filling his face.
Stephen blinked, surprised but amused. He opened his mouth to speak, but Dec jumped in, determined to say his piece.
"We couldn't ask for a better friend," Dec said, his voice warm. "Honestly, you're like a little brother to us, Stephen. And we know we're sometimes a bit cheeky, but it's all in fun! We'd never do anything to hurt you."
"Exactly! You're one of the best things that's happened to us," Ant added, voice thick with sincerity. "We don't say it enough, and maybe we should start saying it more. Because we honestly love you, Stephen."
As they kept going, spilling their feelings with barely a breath between sentences, Stephen's eyes softened. He tried a few times to interject, to tell them he knew, that he had never doubted their friendship for a moment, but he could hardly get a word in.
The speech went on for a full half-hour, with Ant and Dec listing every reason they adored him, every reason he was a vital part of their lives. Finally, Stephen rolled his eyes with a smile, raising his hands to gently cover their mouths.
They both stopped mid-sentence, looking at him in surprise, and he raised an eyebrow as if to say, 'alright, enough'.
"Would you two let me get a word in edgewise?" he teased, his voice filled with affection. He lowered his hands and looked at them with a soft, fond expression. "I know how much you both love me. I've never doubted that for a second. All those pranks, the jokes-that's just who we are. I'd never think you were actually trying to hurt me."
Dec's shoulders relaxed, and he laughed, almost in relief. Ant let out a long breath, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly. They shared a quick glance before looking back at Stephen.
"Thank goodness," Dec muttered, letting out a chuckle. "We just wanted to make sure."
Stephen grinned, pulling them both into a tight hug. "You two are a couple of softies, you know that?"
They hugged him back, holding him a little longer than usual, letting the warmth of the moment sink in.
"Only for you," Ant replied, his voice a bit muffled against Stephen's shoulder.
They all laughed, and when they finally pulled apart, there was a lighter air between them, a deeper understanding. Whatever teasing or banter lay ahead, they knew that their friendship-the love and respect they had for one another-would always be the foundation.
