Ant and Dec showed up at Stephen's front door just as the first hints of dawn painted the sky in soft pinks and oranges. Ant held takeaway bags that filled the crisp morning air with the smell of bacon, sausage, and freshly baked pastries, while Dec balanced three coffees in a cardboard carrier, trying not to spill. Ant gave the door a few sharp knocks, careful not to wake up the entire neighbourhood, sharing a grin with Dec as they waited.
After a few moments, the door creaked open, and a sleepy Stephen appeared, his hair tousled and eyes barely open. He blinked in surprise, rubbing his eyes as he took in the sight of his two friends standing there, smiling and loaded with breakfast at this early hour.
"What... What are you doing here?" he mumbled, his voice thick with sleep, still trying to piece together why they'd come over unannounced, and with food, no less.
Ant's grin widened as he handed over one of the bags. "Morning, mate! Figured you'd be hungry."
"Yeah, and maybe a bit lonely too," Dec added, raising a coffee cup like a toast, the warmth of his smile easing Stephen's initial grogginess. "Hope you don't mind. Thought it's been too long since we've had a proper day together, so we're here to fix that."
Stephen stared at them both, his mind slowly catching up. "You... just decided to show up? With breakfast?" he asked, both confused and a little touched. It wasn't like them to be so impulsive.
Dec chuckled, giving him a gentle nudge inside. "That's the whole point of a surprise, silly. Now come on, let's get inside before the food goes cold."
As they moved into his cosy kitchen, Stephen felt a wave of gratitude for the simple thoughtfulness of it all. He hadn't realised how much he'd missed them until they were here, standing in his kitchen as if they belonged there. They settled around his small table, passing around flaky croissants and breakfast rolls, laughing as they shared bites and jostled each other in the friendly way only they could.
Over sips of coffee and stolen bites, they fell into their easy rhythm, talking over each other with stories, laughing until they were clutching their stomachs. Yet as the morning wore on, Stephen found himself wondering about the surprise visit. They hadn't mentioned any particular reason for being here, and he couldn't shake the feeling that there was something behind it.
Between bites of a buttery pastry, he finally asked, "So... why the early morning ambush? You two aren't usually this spontaneous." His voice was playful but laced with a genuine curiosity.
Ant and Dec exchanged a quick, knowing glance, the kind that seemed to hold a silent conversation Stephen was used to seeing them share. They both smiled, but Dec's was softer, almost reassuring.
"Honestly? We just missed you," Dec said, his voice warm, though he didn't elaborate further.
Ant reached over, giving Stephen a light pat on the back. "Yeah, mate. Thought maybe you could use a bit of company today."
Stephen met their gazes, searching for more, but something in their expressions made him let it go. Maybe they sensed he'd been feeling a bit off lately, or maybe they just wanted to be there for him-whatever the reason, he didn't need to pry. Instead, he let himself sink into the comfort of being with them, his friends who somehow always knew what he needed, even when he didn't.
The day flowed effortlessly from there. After finishing breakfast, they moved into his living room, lounging on the couch and reminiscing about funny memories, teasing each other until laughter filled the space. Hours passed without them noticing, and at some point, they decided to take a walk down to the local park, where they strolled leisurely, breathing in the fresh air. Stephen felt himself relax completely, the usual tension in his shoulders easing with every laugh, every joke shared between them.
As they walked through the park, Dec nudged Stephen with his shoulder. "Feels like old times, doesn't it?"
Stephen smiled, feeling a pang of nostalgia. "Yeah. Can't believe we used to do this almost every week... life just gets in the way, I suppose."
Ant nodded thoughtfully. "That's why we came, mate. You deserve a day to just be... well, you." He gave Stephen a small, fond smile that made Stephen's heart warm. It wasn't just the usual banter-they were here because they genuinely cared.
As evening approached, the three of them found their way back to Stephen's flat, each of them sinking into his sofa with a contented sigh. Exhaustion from a day well-spent settled over them, but Stephen still couldn't shake the question that had lingered since morning. He turned to them, a small smile tugging at his lips.
"Alright, come on-why did you really come over?" he asked, his voice softer this time. "Not that I don't appreciate it... I just feel like there's more to it."
Ant and Dec exchanged another glance, but this time Dec reached over, placing a reassuring hand on Stephen's arm. "The truth, then? We missed you, and... well, we wanted you to know we're here, no matter what," he said, his gaze warm and steady. "Life's busy, but you're important to us. We didn't want you to ever doubt that."
Ant nodded, his voice low but sincere. "We love you, mate. Just thought we'd remind you, in case you forgot."
Stephen felt a lump form in his throat as he looked between them, their expressions so earnest and full of care. He hadn't realised just how much he'd needed to hear that until now. "I love you both too," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "More than you know."
The three of them fell into a warm silence, an unspoken understanding lingering in the air. Then, with a grin, Dec wrapped an arm around Stephen's shoulders, pulling him into a side hug, and Ant joined, draping an arm across both of them. They sat huddled together, enjoying the closeness, no words needed to convey the depth of their bond.
As the sun began to set, casting a warm, golden glow over the room, they sat there in comfortable silence, knowing that this was all they needed. Just each other and the quiet assurance that, no matter how much time passed, their friendship would always be a constant, steady and unwavering.
They may not have said everything aloud, but in the gentle touches and shared glances, Stephen felt a promise: he'd never be alone as long as he had them by his side.
