Ant and Dec were feeling the strain of long days in the studio, their schedules packed tight with meetings, rehearsals, and shoots. But as busy as they were, something felt off, like a missing piece in their usual routine. After wrapping up for the day, Ant turned to Dec with a thoughtful look.
"Don't you feel like we haven't properly seen Stephen in ages?" Ant said, voicing the thought that had been bothering him for days.
Dec nodded, a smile growing. "Let's go drag him out for dinner. It'd be good to catch up-God knows he needs a break as much as we do."
Within minutes, they'd texted Stephen, but received only a halfhearted, "Maybe." So they decided to go to his place and ask in person.
When they arrived, they found Stephen at his desk, focused on his notes. He looked up, surprised but smiling at the sight of his friends.
"Look at you two," he laughed softly. "Didn't realise I was getting a house call."
Ant grinned, nudging Dec. "We missed you, mate! It's not the same without you around to keep us in line."
Dec chimed in, "We thought you could use a break too. Come on, let's go grab some dinner. Our treat."
Stephen hesitated, glancing at the work spread out before him. "Are you two serious? This isn't some... prank, is it?"
Ant placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "We're serious. We just really miss hanging out with you, that's all. We're all working so hard on our own stuff that we barely get to see each other. Let's just have a laugh together, yeah?"
Stephen's apprehension melted, a smile spreading across his face. "Alright, alright. You've convinced me. Let's go."
The trio strolled into a cosy little café, one of their favourite spots where the staff knew them well. They snagged a quiet corner table, and soon enough, the waiter brought over their drinks and some appetisers.
Stephen still seemed a little wary, looking between them as if expecting some joke. He finally blurted, "So... why me, tonight?"
Ant and Dec shared a look before Dec replied, "Honestly? We miss you, mate. We've all been so busy that we barely get to see each other, and we just thought... we don't want to lose out on our time together. It's important."
Stephen softened, nodding as he took a sip of his drink. "I guess... I just didn't realise you two felt like that too. I thought maybe I was being silly, feeling a bit disconnected."
"You're not," Ant assured him, reaching out to give Stephen's shoulder a reassuring squeeze. "We all feel it, especially with how much time we're putting into separate projects. It's good to be here, isn't it?"
Stephen's face brightened as he laughed. "Alright, alright. Let's make this night count then!"
They spent the evening catching up on stories from their lives, sharing a few embarrassing moments from recent shoots, and exchanging ridiculous inside jokes that kept them laughing until their stomachs hurt. The hours slipped by unnoticed as they enjoyed just being in each other's company, reminding themselves of the bond they shared.
As they were wrapping up, Stephen looked at Ant and Dec, a newfound ease in his eyes. "Thank you, really. Tonight was exactly what I needed."
Dec patted him on the back. "We're always here for you, mate. Don't forget that."
And as they left the café, each of them felt a little lighter, grateful for the friendship that kept them together through all the busyness life threw their way.
