It was a lazy afternoon when Stephen was sprawled out on the living room floor, propped up on one arm as he flipped through a book with the other. His legs were bent comfortably beneath him, but his attention was mostly on the music playing softly in the background. His Spotify playlist, a collection of his favourite musical theatre hits, was playing uninterrupted, and soon, his voice joined in with the lyrics, a natural rhythm that came with the territory of being so in tune with the melodies.
The track changed, and the opening chords of Giants in the Sky from Into the Woods filled the room. Stephen's eyes lit up at the familiar tune, and without missing a beat, he began to sing along, his voice rising and falling with the power and elegance of someone who had performed this song hundreds of times in their mind.
Laid on his ribs, his body stretched out awkwardly but comfortably, Stephen's voice still soared. He belted out the high notes effortlessly, his clear tone filling the room and almost echoing off the walls. It was as though the floor beneath him didn't matter, that he could sing from any position and still sound perfect.
What Stephen didn't know was that Ant and Dec had arrived and were standing in the entrance to the living room, stunned. The two friends had walked in, expecting a quiet hangout, only to be greeted by the surprising force of Stephen's voice. They exchanged a glance before slowly making their way inside, utterly captivated by how effortlessly he hit every note.
Stephen's voice reached its final note, and there was a brief silence. Just as he was about to lower his voice to the next lyric, Ant and Dec burst into applause, their hands clapping enthusiastically, the sound of their admiration booming in the quiet room.
Stephen jumped in surprise, his heart racing from the sudden interruption. He scrambled to sit up, a little flustered as he fumbled for the remote. "Alexa, stop playing," he said, and the music obediently ceased.
"Wow, Stephen," Ant said with a grin, his eyes wide with awe. "That was amazing! You still sound perfect, even when you're lying down."
Dec nodded in agreement, his usual grin wide as he crossed his arms. "I thought we were just coming in to hang out, but we're getting a live performance too? Don't charge us for that."
Stephen chuckled, still a little embarrassed, but a smile tugged at his lips. "Well, I'm glad you liked it," he said, standing up and walking toward them.
He pulled both of them into a tight hug, his arms wrapping around their shoulders in a warm, familiar embrace. "It's so good to see you both," he said softly, feeling the comfort of their presence.
"Good to see you too, mate," Ant replied, giving Stephen a little squeeze.
Dec ruffled Stephen's hair affectionately. "Are we still playing UNO, or is this a full-blown concert now?"
Stephen laughed, stepping back as he led them to the living room. "UNO sounds perfect. I think I'll stick to being your personal jukebox some other time."
They settled into a cosy circle, the game cards spread out on the floor between them. The afternoon passed in laughter and lighthearted teasing as they each tried to get the upper hand in the game, but it wasn't about winning. It was about being together, sharing stories, and enjoying the quiet moments that came with their long-standing friendship.
As they played, Stephen couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. The simple joy of being surrounded by people who cared about him was more than enough. The music, the laughter, the game-it was all just a reminder of how lucky he was to have friends like Ant and Dec in his life.
