Ant decided he was going to make Dec laugh-and maybe blush-by giving him as many quirky and affectionate nicknames as he could dream up throughout the day. The challenge: to reach fifty different names, no repeats, and to give Dec twice as many hugs as usual to remind him of how much he was loved.
As soon as they met up, Ant began. "Good morning, Captain Cuddles," he grinned, throwing his arms around Dec and giving him a tight squeeze.
Dec laughed, surprised. "Captain Cuddles, huh?"
"Yup, figured you needed a heroic title today," Ant said, eyes twinkling. "Now, let's go, Soggy Socks."
"Soggy Socks?" Dec repeated with a raised eyebrow, but Ant quickly steered him away, rambling on about the day's plans.
Throughout the day, the nicknames kept coming, each one seemingly more ridiculous and adorable than the last. Dec became "Fuzzy Muffin" when they stopped for coffee, "Snuggle Bug" as they walked through the studio, and "Sunshine Sprinkles" during lunch. Ant didn't let Dec question it, brushing off every raised eyebrow or amused chuckle with a quick subject change and another hug.
"Ant, seriously-'Dimple Wizard'? What's going on?" Dec asked at one point, barely containing his laughter.
"Ah, Dimple Wizard, stop asking questions. You're too magical to understand!" Ant replied, hugging him once more, ruffling his hair, and diving into some random story about a funny memory from a past show.
By the time they were headed home in the back of the car, Dec was still chuckling, completely baffled by Ant's relentless affection and string of wild nicknames.
"Alright, mate," Dec finally said, nudging Ant. "You have to tell me-what was that all about?"
Ant laughed, pulling Dec into a side hug. "Alright, alright. I wanted to see if I could give you fifty different nicknames today. And, well, I just wanted to remind you how much I love you, how much you mean to me." He looked at Dec, his expression softening. "You're my best mate, Dec, and I adore you. Just wanted to make sure you felt that today."
Dec's cheeks flushed, but he grinned. "Fifty, huh? You're an absolute nutter... but I love you too, mate. You're the best friend anyone could ask for."
They sat in comfortable silence for a moment, Ant's arm around Dec as the car carried them home. Finally, Dec smirked, glancing up at him. "You know I'm going to get you back, right?"
"Oh, I'm sure you will," Ant replied, chuckling. "Bring it on, Dimple Wizard."
The next day, Dec was ready. The tables had turned, and it was his turn to bombard Ant with nicknames and affection. Ant became "Pudding Face" over breakfast, "Honey Nugget" in the dressing room, and "Cuddle Bear" on set. Dec made sure to add in more hugs than Ant had the day before, wrapping his arms around him every chance he got, and when they weren't hugging, Dec was holding his hand, leaning against him, or resting his head on Ant's shoulder.
Ant didn't mind in the slightest. He knew it was Dec's way of showing his love back, and he embraced it wholeheartedly. The two of them laughed endlessly, exchanging soft smiles, and whenever Dec caught him looking touched or surprised, he'd grin, tugging him into yet another embrace.
"Listen, Pudding Face," Dec teased as they wrapped up the day, his hand resting on Ant's shoulder. "You're my best friend, and I wouldn't trade you for anything. Just wanted to make sure you knew that today."
Ant felt a lump in his throat, smiling softly. "You big softy. I love you too, Dec."
And so the day ended, with both of them feeling even closer than before, their friendship wrapped in warmth, laughter, and countless quirky, endearing nicknames.
