800 words.

It was late—one of those quiet, exhausted nights after a long day of work. Maki and Harua shared the same schedule and were riding back to the dorms together. Their manager, Mr. Kim, was driving. Maki sat in the back seat, head resting against the window, half-asleep. Up front, Harua kept the conversation going, chatting softly with Mr. Kim as the city lights slipped by.

They were just two blocks from the dorm when everything changed.

Out of nowhere, a pedestrian stepped onto the road without looking. Mr. Kim hit the brakes hard, managing to stop just in time. But the car behind them wasn't as quick—it slammed into the back of their vehicle at full speed.

The impact was jarring.
It hit them hard.

Maki's world went dark for a moment. When he opened his eyes, he couldn't breathe. The back of the car had folded in around him. Pressure pressed against his chest. He couldn't move. Panic rose quickly, like a scream stuck in his throat.
He was barely conscious but his mind kept running, kept thinking.

I can't... breathe. I can't move...
What's happening?

In the front, Harua's head snapped forward then back, and everything blurred. His ears rang. The air was thick. He looked around, eyes wide, disoriented.

"...what... what just—?"

Mr. Kim didn't answer. He was frozen. Eyes locked on the rearview mirror, trying to see Maki. His lips parted, but no words came.

Then, chaos. Sirens. Shouting.

When the paramedics and firefighters arrived, they moved quickly—pulling Harua and Mr. Kim out. Harua stumbled, almost collapsing.

"Wait... Maki. Is he..? He's in the back. Please. He's not answering."

Maki was still trapped, eyes barely open now, breaths shallow and wheezing.

I'm scared... help... please...

They got to him.
Firefighters worked to separate the two cars—using chains and a truck to drag the other vehicle backward.

All eyes were on the backseat.

It took time. Maki was unresponsive now, his breathing shallow and uneven. The firefighters worked quickly but carefully, finally managing to extract him. He was unconscious, his left shoulder dislocated, and his arm likely broken. The paramedics moved fast—piercing his chest with a needle to relieve the pressure from a suspected pneumothorax. An oxygen mask followed. Every second mattered.

"Left shoulder dislocated, possible compound fracture on the arm. Chest trauma. Prep him—he goes first."

Maki was rushed into the ER. Harua and Mr. Kim arrived minutes later, escorted in wheelchairs. Both were quiet—too quiet.

Harua: "...he wasn't moving. He wasn't breathing right..."

Mr. Kim : "I thought... I thought we were going to lose him."

They were checked by doctors and told to stay the night. But neither of them could rest. All Harua could think about was the sound of the crash. The silence after. Maki's pale face.

"I should've been in the back..."

Mr. Jung, the other manager, arrived just after midnight. His eyes scanned the room, locking on Harua first, then Mr. Kim.

Mr. Jung: "You're both okay. Thank God. And Maki?"

Mr. Kim : "They're still taking care of him. But he's stable now... they think he'll recover."

Mr. Jung : "I'll tell the others. They'll be worried sick."

The Next Day Maki had been moved to a hospital room. An IV dripped beside him. His arm was in a sling, oxygen still helping him breathe. He was awake, but fragile.

Harua entered the room slowly, followed by Mr. Kim. When Maki saw them, his eyes welled up.

Maki : "...You're okay..."

Harua walked over and sat beside him. He didn't try to hide the tears in his eyes.

Harua: "You scared the hell out of me, you idiot."
His voice cracked.
"I thought you weren't gonna wake up."

Maki : "Yeah... me too."

They both laughed, a little brokenly. Then Harua's head dropped against Maki's uninjured shoulder.

Harua : "I was so scared. I didn't even know where you were. I heard the car crush... I didn't know if you were breathing..."

Maki :" I couldn't breathe. It felt like... like I was drowning."

Mr. Kim stood nearby, watching them with red eyes. He hadn't said much, but now, he stepped forward.

Mr. Kim:
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. If I hadn't braked, maybe.."

Maki : "You avoided that pedestrian, saved him. And you saved us too."

The room was quiet for a beat.

Then the door opened, and the rest of &TEAM entered—worried, hesitant.

Yuma was first, his face pale. Fuma and K were right behind, followed by the others.

Yuma : "Maki..."

He stepped to the bed and squeezed Maki's hand gently.

K : "You really know how to scare the group, huh?"

Maki : "Yeah... sorry about that."

The rest of the group gathered close. They stayed like that for a while, the weight of what could have happened sitting heavy between them—but so did the relief.

They were here. Still together. And healing.
