1300 words.
The night was crisp as Jungwon and Jake drove through the quiet city streets. Their shopping bags were stacked in the backseat, remnants of their spontaneous trip to the mall earlier that evening. Both were tired, but in a good way-satisfied with their purchases and happy with the simple pleasure of a quiet night out.
Jungwon sat in the passenger seat, looking out of the window. His fingers drummed absently on the armrest, his mind drifting in the calm after the excitement of the mall. He hadn't planned on spending much, but Jake had a way of convincing him to get things he didn't really need. Still, he couldn't deny the feeling of contentment that came with their little adventure. The sound of the engine humming beneath them was comforting, the soft shuffle of the radio barely audible as they sped down the empty roads.
Jake glanced at his friend, the glow of the dashboard lights illuminating Jungwon's face. "You okay over there?" he asked, his voice light.
Jungwon gave a half-smile, still staring out the window. "Yeah, just tired. And I guess I got a little lost in my thoughts."
Jake nodded, understanding. He knew Jungwon's tendency to get lost in his own head, especially after a busy day. He was like that sometimes too, but not as often as Jungwon.
A few minutes passed, the car weaving in and out of the occasional streetlight. Jake's thoughts were still on the night-on how good it had been to just hang out with his friend. It wasn't often they had time to themselves without other members crowding them or schedules getting in the way. But tonight had been theirs, and Jake wanted to make it last a little longer.
"Hey, how's the new hoodie fit?" Jake asked, trying to keep the conversation going. He grinned when Jungwon's eyes shifted toward him, an expression of fond exasperation on his face.
"It's great. You convinced me to get the oversized one, but I think it's perfect," Jungwon replied, his voice quieter than usual. He shifted in his seat, adjusting his position, trying to get more comfortable. "Honestly, though, I didn't even know I needed a hoodie like that."
"I have the magic touch when it comes to shopping," Jake teased, winking as he kept his focus on the road.
The city lights flickered as they passed, the streets growing quieter as they got farther away from the shopping district. The car's steady hum was almost hypnotic, but something about it started to make Jungwon feel... off.
He shifted in his seat again, his eyes moving from the window to the dashboard and back. He felt a dull ache in the back of his head, like a gentle pressure building up. It wasn't anything major at first, just a small discomfort that he brushed off.
Jake was still talking about the new shoes he had bought, but Jungwon wasn't really listening anymore. The gentle sway of the car, the rhythmic hum of the tires against the asphalt, it all started to get to him. He felt the familiar wave of nausea creeping up his throat, and his stomach churned uncomfortably.
It wasn't something he usually talked about, but Jungwon had always had a weak stomach when it came to motion. He had learned to live with it, ignoring the feeling whenever he could, but tonight... tonight was different.
He squeezed his eyes shut for a moment, trying to fight the feeling, but it only made it worse. He could feel the world spinning, the movement of the car growing more pronounced as if the road was shifting beneath them.
"Jake," he said, his voice a little shakier than he intended.
Jake glanced over, his brow furrowing when he saw the uncomfortable look on Jungwon's face. "You okay?"
Jungwon took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. He didn't want to admit it, not now, not when everything had been so perfect. But the feeling in his stomach was only getting worse.
"I think you should pull over for a second," Jungwon said, his voice quieter now, almost hesitant. He turned to look at Jake, trying to sound casual, but the panic in his chest was starting to build. "I... I don't feel so good."
Jake's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "Wait, what? You don't feel good? What's wrong?" He pulled the car over to the side of the road, his concern evident.
Jungwon leaned his head against the window, trying to keep his breathing steady. "I think it's motion sickness. I didn't know it'd be this bad, but..." He trailed off, feeling embarrassed.
Jake quickly turned off the engine, his hands gripping the steering wheel as he studied his friend. He had no idea that Jungwon struggled with motion sickness. In all the time they had known each other, it had never come up. Maybe Jungwon had been good at hiding it, or maybe he just didn't mention it-either way, Jake felt bad for not noticing sooner.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Jake asked softly, concern lacing his voice.
Jungwon squeezed his eyes shut, his fingers gripping the seatbelt tightly. "I didn't think it would be this bad. I didn't want to stop, especially when we're almost home."
Jake bit his lip, his mind racing. He had no experience with motion sickness. He knew how bad it could make someone feel, but he didn't really know what to do. "Okay, just breathe. It'll pass, right? You just need a moment, yeah?"
Jungwon nodded, taking deep breaths, trying to focus on the cool night air as it streamed through the cracked window. The chill on his skin helped, but the sensation of dizziness wouldn't fade. His stomach was still turning, and he could feel the tension building in his chest.
"Maybe I should've told you earlier," Jungwon mumbled, still unable to look at Jake. The embarrassment of being vulnerable in front of his friend made him feel small.
Jake, though, seemed to sense his discomfort. He leaned back in his seat and gave a soft chuckle, trying to ease the tension. "You don't need to explain anything to me. It's okay. I just wish I knew, so I could've slowed down or something."
"I didn't want to ruin the night," Jungwon said quietly. "It's just... motion sickness is one of those things I've always dealt with on my own. I didn't want to make it awkward."
Jake's eyes softened. He reached over and gave Jungwon a gentle pat on the shoulder. "You're not ruining anything, okay? We're friends. It's alright to tell me when something's wrong."
Jungwon let out a soft sigh, the tension in his body finally starting to ease. He was still a little dizzy, but Jake's words brought a sense of calm.
"Thanks, Jake," Jungwon said, his voice quieter now, but the sincerity behind it was clear. He turned toward his friend, meeting his gaze for the first time since he had asked Jake to pull over.
Jake smiled warmly, his usual playful expression back. "Anytime, man. And next time, just tell me when you're feeling off, alright?"
Jungwon nodded. "I will. Promise."
After a few more moments of silence, Jungwon started to feel better. The nausea was fading, the dizziness dissipating. As much as he hated to admit it, he felt grateful for Jake's easygoing nature. Even though he had never known Jungwon struggled with motion sickness, he hadn't panicked. He'd simply pulled over and given him the time he needed to recover. That was all Jungwon really needed-to not feel like a burden, to know he wasn't alone.
With a final deep breath, Jungwon straightened in his seat. "Alright, I think I'm good to go now."
Jake grinned, his eyes twinkling. "Great. Let's get you home, then."
And with that, they were back on the road again.
