It was nearly 3 a.m., and the dorm was still. Most of the members were in a deep sleep, with only the faint hum of city sounds filtering through the windows. But for Sunghoon, sleep was elusive. His heart was racing, his breaths shallow and uneven. Shadows crept through his mind, bringing with them memories he wished he could forget - memories that returned without warning, gripping him in an icy hold.
Lying in bed, he gripped his blanket tightly, trying to ground himself, to remind himself he was safe here. But the feelings were too strong, too visceral. His body was tense, frozen with a fear that felt as real as the day he'd first experienced it.
This wasn't the first time he'd felt like this, trapped in his own memories, but this episode felt more intense, refusing to ease up. He could hear his own breath coming in shaky gasps, his pulse pounding so loudly he was sure it would wake someone. As much as he didn't want to disturb his members, the idea of being alone with these feelings scared him even more.
Trying to ground himself, he focused on the faint sound of someone stirring in the room next door. A small part of him hoped that maybe, just maybe, one of the members would wake up and come find him. He wouldn't call for help, but he wouldn't turn it away either.
Minutes passed, and then he heard soft footsteps padding down the hallway. He squeezed his eyes shut, unsure if he was ready to face anyone but not wanting to be alone either. The door creaked open a crack, and a head poked in. It was Jungwon, blinking in the dim light, his eyes adjusting as he looked over at Sunghoon's bed.
"Sunghoon?" he whispered, his voice a gentle anchor in the dark. "Are you okay?"
Sunghoon hesitated, but he didn't turn away. He nodded, though his breathing was still shaky. Jungwon came closer, moving with caution, sensing something was wrong but waiting for any signal from Sunghoon that he could come closer.
Finally, Sunghoon managed to whisper, "I just...can't get out of my head." His voice was barely audible, but Jungwon caught the strain in it. Without a word, Jungwon sat down beside him, offering silent reassurance with his presence alone.
He didn't push Sunghoon to explain or try to fix the situation. Instead, he sat quietly, leaning his shoulder against Sunghoon's to let him know he was there, steady and calm. The room fell silent again, but the darkness felt less consuming with someone beside him.
A few minutes later, another light flicked on in the hallway. Heeseung shuffled in, looking concerned as he took in the scene. His face softened as he registered what was happening, and without asking any questions, he joined Jungwon at Sunghoon's side. He gently placed a hand on Sunghoon's arm, giving it a reassuring squeeze.
"Couldn't sleep either?" Heeseung asked softly, as if it were a casual question, though he knew the answer. Sunghoon nodded, swallowing hard, his throat tight with emotions he couldn't quite express. They stayed in a comfortable silence, the gentle touch of his friends grounding him more than words could.
Soon, Jake joined them, rubbing sleep from his eyes but instantly alert when he saw Sunghoon's expression. He moved to the other side of the bed, offering a soft smile. "We're here, Sunghoon," he said quietly. "Take all the time you need."
One by one, the rest of the members filtered into the room, as if sensing that Sunghoon needed them, even if he hadn't asked. Sunoo, Ni-ki, and Jay sat on the floor beside the bed, creating a quiet circle of support around him. None of them demanded an explanation or tried to pry into what had happened. They just stayed there, each in their own way offering silent comfort.
Sunghoon didn't speak much that night, but he didn't need to. His friends' quiet presence said everything he needed to hear : that he wasn't alone, that they understood his pain, even without knowing every detail. They didn't expect him to be okay, didn't try to make the pain vanish, but simply stayed with him in it, reminding him that he had people who cared.
Hours passed in the gentle stillness, and little by little, the tension in Sunghoon's body eased. His breathing began to steady, his heart rate slowing as he felt the warmth of his friends' presence.
As dawn broke, casting a soft light across the room, Sunghoon felt a strange calm settle over him. The night had been long and hard, but he hadn't faced it alone. He knew the memories and fear might return another night, but he also knew that he wouldn't have to face them by himself.
For now, that was enough.
