It was supposed to be a normal day... but something was off.

Practice had been dragging on longer than usual. Sweat coated the mirrors and the tension in the room was so thick it could've been cut with a knife. The choreography wasn't clicking, tempers were running high, and everyone was tired. But no one seemed to be taking it harder than Huening Kai.

He kept missing beats, his movements were slightly off—not sloppy, just... not in sync. For most, it would've been brushed off as fatigue. But not today.

"Huening Kai, get it right!" the choreographer snapped, voice booming across the room.

The sudden volume startled him so badly that his foot caught the edge of the mat. His balance gave out—and instinctively, he reached out for anything to steady himself.

His hand closed around something cold and metallic.

Snap.

Soobin's bracelet.

The one everyone knew not to touch. The one he never took off. The one that had once belonged to someone special.

The room went still.

"HUENINGKAI!" Soobin's voice cracked through the air like a whip.

Kai stared at the broken bracelet in his hand, his heart in his throat.

"Hyung..." he choked out, eyes wide with fear and guilt.

Soobin's face twisted—not in anger, but in pain.

"WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU? CAN'T YOU DO ANYTHING RIGHT?!" he screamed, stepping forward.

That was the blow that did it. Not the bracelet breaking. Not the fall. Not the yelling. But those words—from the leader he looked up to like a brother.

Kai turned, heart pounding, vision blurry. But just as he began to walk out, a voice he never thought he'd hear against him joined in.

"Huening Kai... I think you should leave."

He stopped. Turned slowly. Taehyun. His best friend. The one who called him "Kai," never his full name.

"Bu..." he tried to protest, voice cracking.

But Taehyun's eyes were unreadable, cold. "You don't get it, do you? HUENINGKAI, THAT BRACELET IS IMPORTANT!"

That was it.

Kai walked out of the studio, shoulders hunched, eyes burning, lips trembling. He didn't know where he was going. He didn't even have the strength to go home. He just... wandered.

The cold bit into his skin, the wind sharp against his damp clothes. He pulled his hoodie tighter around him, but it wasn't enough. The world around him blurred, the city lights distorting through his tears.

An hour passed.

His phone buzzed over and over in his pocket. He didn't want to look—but something in him, some desperate hope, made him glance.

Bunny Hyung🐰 Huening where are you? — Read

Bunny Hyung 🐰: Huening, I'm sorry for lashing out. Please come back.

Foxy Hyung 🦊: Huening, honey I'm sorry for not stopping them. Come back. Where are you?

Best cat in the world 🐱: Huening, where are you? I'm sorry for telling you to leave. I can't believe what I did.

Beary Hyung 🐻: Kai-ah, where are you??

Back at the dorm, panic was setting in.

"He's not picking up," Yeonjun said, pacing. His voice was tight with worry.

"Hyung... he left me on read," Soobin said, holding his phone like it could give him answers.

"Maybe he's near the lake," Taehyun suddenly spoke, voice quiet. "It's his favorite place... when he wants to be alone."

They didn't wait. All of them rushed out, no one saying a word—but each one praying they weren't too late.

And just like Taehyun said... they found him.

Curled up on a bench near the frozen lake, shivering. His hoodie wasn't enough, his lips were tinged blue, and his fingers were trembling.

"Huening! Hold on!" Yeonjun yelled as they ran to him.

Kai looked up weakly. "Hyungie... I'm sorry..." he whispered, voice barely audible.

Soobin dropped to his knees beside him, wrapping his coat around him without hesitation. "No, I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry." His voice cracked.

The ambulance arrived faster than they expected. Luck, or maybe something else.

At the hospital, they waited.

Every tick of the clock felt like a lifetime.

"Is he okay?" Taehyun asked, eyes rimmed red.

The nurse gave a gentle smile. "Yes. You're lucky you found him when you did. He's stable now. But he'll need rest—and care."

That night, sitting in the sterile hospital waiting room, none of them said much. There were no rehearsals, no music, no spotlight. Just five boys who had made a mistake they never wanted to make again.

They promised each other, then and there: never again would they let frustration hurt one of their own. Especially not Huening Kai.

Because family means more than perfection.
