600 words.
Jisung wasn't sure how long he stood there, Chan's hand just barely brushing his sleeve. Seconds, minutes—time felt strange when his heart was pounding this loudly in his ears.
But nothing bad happened. The world didn't tilt on its axis. The walls didn't close in.
And yet, when he finally stepped back, something inside him felt just as fragile as before.
Chan didn't comment on it. Didn't ask if he was okay. Didn't push him to talk.
He just smiled, soft and steady. "Come on, let's sit for a bit."
Jisung nodded, barely more than a twitch of his head. He let Chan lead the way to the couch, where he curled up in his usual corner, knees drawn to his chest. He wasn't sure why his throat felt tight, why his chest ached like he had run a marathon.
Chan sat next to him—not too close, not too far.
"Just breathe," he murmured.
Jisung did. Or, at least, he tried.
It didn't change overnight.
He still flinched when hands moved too fast. Still dodged casual touches without thinking. Still struggled to find the words to explain why.
But something was different now.
Because now, they knew.
And they didn't treat him like he was broken.
Felix still asked, "Is this okay?" before reaching out. Hyunjin still hesitated before ruffling his hair, waiting for a nod that never came. Seungmin and Jeongin still gave him space without making it a big deal.
But they also never let him forget that they were there.
Small things. Simple things.
Leaving an extra seat open next to him at dinner, just in case he felt like moving closer. Passing him things instead of making him take them from their hands. Staying near, even when they couldn't touch.
And Jisung noticed.
The real test came a few weeks later.
It had been a long day. Rehearsals, interviews, more rehearsals. His body ached, exhaustion settling deep in his bones. He was drained, but his mind wouldn't quiet down.
He hated this feeling. This in-between state of too much and not enough.
The dorm was quiet when he got back. Most of the others were already in their rooms, but Chan was still in the living room, typing something on his laptop.
Jisung hesitated in the hallway, staring at him.
He could just go to his room. Pretend he wasn't standing here, heart in his throat, fingers twitching at his sides.
Or...
Chan must have felt his gaze because he looked up, brows lifting in question. "Hey, you okay?"
Jisung's mouth was dry. He didn't know what to say. Didn't even know what he wanted.
Chan waited.
And then, for the second time in weeks, Jisung made a choice.
Moving stiffly, like his own body wasn't sure what he was doing, he stepped forward. Slowly, cautiously, he sank onto the couch—not in his usual corner, but next to Chan. Close enough that their legs almost brushed.
Chan didn't move. Didn't react. Just let him sit there, let him be.
Jisung's hands curled into the fabric of his hoodie. He swallowed hard. His skin still prickled with the ghost of old anxieties, but—
This was okay.
"...Tired?" Chan asked quietly.
Jisung nodded.
Chan hummed. Then, just as gently as before, he shifted—not closing the space between them, not reaching out, but tilting ever so slightly, a silent offer.
Jisung's breath caught.
His heartbeat roared in his ears.
And then, cautiously, hesitantly—he let himself lean.
Not much. Just enough for his shoulder to press against Chan's arm. Just enough to feel the warmth, solid and grounding.
Chan didn't move. Didn't breathe too hard, didn't react like this was something big, even though it was.
Jisung squeezed his eyes shut. His body screamed at him to pull away. But he didn't.
And maybe, just maybe...
This was a start.
