~ September ~
"Okay my friends, now that we've established our morning routine and identified," you tap your eye, "what the morning bins are, we're now going to do our class promise!"
One little girl raises her hand so very politely you call on her even though you're not taking any questions right now.
"What does estaish mean, Ms.Y/l/n?"
"Oh," you stand up straight, clasping your hands, after teaching 4th grade for three years you have quite the 180 flip around with kindergarten this year.
You do have to admit they're very cute, and tiny.
And they're not constantly shouting "what the sigma," or "why are you so salty!"
When you're principal came in and asked you if you'd like to switch grades, maybe it was the breath of fresh air you needed. And you needed to be a little more patient and sweet with these angels.
The class was very quiet, as they all stared at you in silence. Waiting for you to explain since they had the same question their peer had.
What was that strange word that came out of the teacher's mouth?
"Um well, sweetie," you clear your throat, scrambling your mind for a logical definition they could understand, "establish means to set up something and have it become permanent."
"Like when my Daddy help build Baby Sister's crib?" One blonde little boy wonders and I'm astonished with how quick they can come up with an example.
"Yes!" You cheer, "your dad established your baby sister's crib in her room. It's going to be there for quite some time."
The kids all look at one another, most of them getting the definition, others still way in over their heads.
"Can you guys repeat establish with me? Establish."
"Estabish!"
"Blish, blish, there's an l after the b my loves, let's try it again. Establish."
"Establish!" They're on it, and almost immediately say it correctly.
"Very good!" Cheering them up, you smile at them. They're just so tiny and so cute! "Now, for our class promise I want all my friends to come onto the carpet with Ms.Y/l/n."
No one moves not one muscles only two kiddos who seemed to be following your directions, as you set up the markers and your big anchor chart poster. Looking up most of your class was still at their desks which were formed into tables.
When you set them up with your parents back in the summer, and the rest of your classroom. "Oh," sitting back on your haunches you have to give props to this dress it's really stretchy.
"You have to call us by tables," that's right, you did say that earlier today that they would be called by color something you weren't used to with your 4th graders they would just all huddle and move to wherever you wanted them.
One little girl makes sure to point that out to you, and if it wasn't for her you'd be confused right now, "let's do my blue table, come on up and sit in your seats on the carpet. Make sure you're sitting on either an animal or a letter. Green table please!"
Following through the other tables until your entire class was on the carpet, you smile again, sighing. "Now, can anyone tell me what a promise is?"
A few hands raise, and you randomly pick, "a promise is something that can't be broken."
