Julian looked around at the house that was once Jenny's. Talitha had been right to tell him not to come here. He had wanted to see if Jenny was okay, and had come here, only to find a different family in the house. Jenny was gone and he didn't know where. He didn't even know exactly how long he'd been dead for. A few years? He hoped she was happy, wherever she was. She had made her choice, and now, he wasn't going to interfere.
He looked over at the small, dark haired girl sleeping in Jenny's old room. No more than 6, she reminded him of Jenny when she'd been small, just as delicate and innocent. Well, he was never falling for that again. All that had gained him was pain and heartbreak. Never again.
The little girl shifted in her sleep, making her hair shift across her face. Julian watched, not really paying attention as he thought about the past. Then he saw it.
Across the girls face, marring the skin of her cheek, a burn scar.
Almost against his will, Julian suddenly felt angry and protective of this girl. How dare anyone let such an innocent being be harmed?!
Berating himself for that flash of emotion, for even thinking like that again, so soon, even after everything, he turned to leave.
"Wait"
A quite but strong voice called through the dark, halting him in his tracks.
