"What do you mean, a witch?" Asked Cat, bewilderment plain on her face.
"You know what a witch is, Cat. Mummy does spells and magic and stuff." Said Pete, still not acting as if he'd said anything out of the ordinary.
Luke gave Pete a harsh look. "Now, it's not nice to call your mum a witch. She's been nothing but nice to everyone, even me and Moira."
Pete looked at Luke, angrily and sulkily. "She is too a witch! I seen her do magic 'n everything! Was not saying she's evil, but she's a witch!"
Harry's voice called from the back of the room. "Well, she's definitely got something weird going on here." He was looking at the shelves of jars that Cat had first noticed when she entered the room. They had been filled with strange colours and shapes, but she hadn't paid much attention to them beyond realising where they were.
Harry ran his fingers along the labels. "Wolfsbane, Basilisk venom, powdered swan feathers, kala-something, Phoenix ash, and unlabeled glowy flying things that- oh god, I think they're alive. I think one waved at me!" He leapt back from the shelves, visibly shaken.
"Cat, your mums a witch.""No she isn't! There's no such thing as witches or magic or mystical creatures! There isn't, there just isn't!" Cat was enraged. How dare they suggest such a thing about her mother, the most down to earth, level headed person she knew. She shook her head, gathering her thoughts.
"It's probably just science experiments, or research for her books, o-or extreme cooking ingredients!"
"Okay, that last ones unlikely, but she's got a point, man." Said Luke, putting his arm around Cat and rubbing her shoulders soothingly. "Besides, this hardly proves anything. As Cat said, she's a writer. This stuffs probably just inspiration for her next book."
"Speaking of books." Said Harry, pulling an old leather volume out of a desk drawer. "Bet this is her spell book. I know, we should totally try one if the spells!"
Cat rolled her eyes. "When it doesn't work, I will be expecting a full apology."
