The girl kept smiling, painfully sweet.
"Are you sure you don't want to stay?"
And Cat noticed something. The flowers began to give off a heady perfume which hung heavy in the air and made her head spin.
She jumped up from the table. "It's the flowers! Run!"
Grabbing Valerian in one hand and Lindsay in the other, she ran through the meadow, Luke leading the way.
They came to the other side, panting and retching, filling their lungs with cool, crisp air.
Then Luke got up and looked around. "Where's Moira?"
She had gone, and so had the meadow.

One by one, the shadowmen picked them off. Luke was next, caught in a grand house which had been run by a beautiful princess in an identical golden mask and a completely new gown, who once again asked them to stay.

Turned out the girl was leader of a band of robbers.

Finally, Lindsay got knocked out by a woman in a cottage, who also turned out to be skilled in magic.

Soon, it was Cat, all by herself, walking through piles and piles of snow, cursing life.
She was so cold, she was sure her lips were blue.
Lips was the wrong thought. She immediately thought of Julian, how'd it had felt to kiss him. She'd never admit it, but she'd actually quite liked it.
He was quite a good kisser actually.
Shame he was her enemy, it really was.

She imagined on the edge of her mind what it would be like for him to hold her again, here and now, in the snow.
He'd be warm for a start. And... He'd rock her gently, and stroke her hair, and she'd feel warm right down to her toes. And he'd kiss her forehead gently, and smile with that annoying smirk of his, the one that she always wanted to wipe off his face, to kiss off his face...

"Do you really find my smirk that annoying? That you would kiss me to get rid of it?"

Cat's eyes whipped open. Oh, damn.
