Lindsay was struggling. She had never been the outdoorsy type, and now she was being forced to run through a dank, dark forest in a miniskirt.
She could hear behind her the snapping, snarling sounds of her pursuer.
Then, something rustled to her left. A moment later, Cat charged out of the bushes to the side, crashing into her and knocking her to the ground.
They laughed and helped each other up. "We must stop meeting like this!" Joked Cat.
The wolves were all around them. Was it one wolf, or two or more? They couldn't tell.
Cat turned to Lindsay. "This is going to sound crazy. Just... don't freak out. I think, the path we are meant to take is being guarded by the wolf, so..."
"We have to go towards the wolf. Uh-huh, okay, tell me why I should be freaking out? In what universe would walking towards a ravenous, man eating monster make me freak out?" Lindsay was slightly hysterical.
Cat gave her a look. "How do you think I found you? The wolf looks scary, but it's bark is worse than its bite."
"Yeah, for you maybe!" Countered Lindsay.
Cat rounded on her.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Oh, like you haven't noticed. You are either the goddamn luckiest person on earth, or the shadowmen are showing you a lot of favouritism. I mean, you solve most of the riddles, you find the one path in an underground maze of tunnels we need, you go up against a dragon and you don't get a scratch. And I swear the dragon had Talitha's brothers, Julian's eyes. I swear it was him. Did you not notice the way he was looking at you back when we first met them? I get the feeling, if anyone was going to survive, it'd be you. The rest of us are just irrelevant."
Cat stared at her, wide eyed. Lindsay was more perceptive than she'd realized. And probably accurate. Julian obviously had no intention of harming her, though Cat still doubted his reasons. But the others? They didn't have that kind of immunity.
Cat spoke more subdued. "Well, it's the only theory I've got on how to win. If you want to try, stick close to me. As you said, the wolf definitely hasn't harmed me so far, but I don't know about you. It's your choice. You won't be harmed if you don't move from this glade."
Then Lindsay did a surprising thing. She smiled at Cat and took her hand. "Let's try together. But no singing 'into the woods' okay?"
Cat sniggered. "Like I'd do tha... Yeah, yeah I would."
