Cat tore down the tunnel, following the growing sound of the flute. The tunnel lead her on, straight on, a gentle glow leading her way down the path. She walked many twists and turns, passing tunnel entrances and exits, but the path she had to follow was always highlighted in a pale gold light.
She passed through tunnel after tunnel, hearing the music grow louder. Once or twice she heard faint sounds in the shadows, making her heart leap into her throat every time, out of fear of rats.
Swiftly she walked onwards, trying to ignore it.
She turned a corner, passing a large doorway. Suddenly, something collided with her at speed, knocking her to the ground. She looked up to find Lindsay, messy and bedraggled, smeared in dirt and grime, laying on top of her.
Quickly, they disentangled, shooting each other awkward looks. Then, surprisingly, they started laughing.
"You came back!" Cat said, dusting herself down.
"Well, yeah. Once the rats were off my tail, I had no excuse to leave you. Besides, we may not be friends but its way to creepy hanging round that town alone." Lindsay answered, looking around. "It was mainly luck I found you. Anyway, any idea which way next?"
"That way." Cat pointed ahead. The girls took of down the path, following the spookily beautiful tune.
Eventually, the girls came to a large cavern, cathedral like and speckled with tunnel openings, so the sound reverberated through the halls and caves of the nest.
In the centre was a figure on a rocky platform, dressed in a shirt and trousers decorated with black and gold diamonds. On his face was a mask in the same pattern. In his hands was an old, crudely fashioned wooden flute from which spilled the enchanting sound spilled.
Cat practically jumped for joy. They had done it! They had found the piper! She started to walk towards him, but got halted by Lindsay. "Look, there." She whispered.
Cat looked.
Surrounding the base of the platform was the rats, moving and writhing in sync, like some twisted dance. Cat gasped "How do we get past?"
"I don't know! Pray really hard?"Cat slowly crept a couple of steps towards the heaving mass of rodents. "This may sound strange, but I think the music is distracting them so much, we could sneak past and they may not notice."
"MAY? MAY NOT NOTICE? AS IN YOU DON'T KNOW?" Lindsay half whispered-half shrieked.
"Well, they haven't noticed you screeching, so that's a good sign." Cat said, rolling her eyes. Why did Lindsay have to be so exasperating? Why?
"Look, let's just try." And gently, Cat crept towards the sea of rats and placed a careful foot down into the heaving, furry swell. The rats parted to make way for her. Quickly, both she and Lindsay rushed across. Rushing up to the Piper, Cat snatched the flute from his lips whilst Lindsay removed his mask.
Harry collapsed into their arms, breathing heavily and silently sobbing.
"Thank you, thank you." He whispered over and over into Cat's shoulder. Cat rubbed his back, quietly soothing him.
Lindsay patted Cat's shoulder. "Erm... I think we're in trouble."Cat turned around to see a hundred pairs of eyes glaring at her.
