Cat could hear the sound of a door or a grate being opened somewhere in the shadows. Then there was the soft padding sound of something stalking towards her. She strained her eyes against the dark, trying to see what it was.
Up above her, she could hear Talitha's voice, magically amplified.
"Welcome to our gladiatorial games! I dedicate them to the person I love most, my brother Julian. And now, in reflection of the great and epic tale, The twelve labours of Hercules, I present to you, The twelve labours of Catherine!"
The sounds of an invisible audience filled the stadium, before trailing off into silence.Oh, brilliant. Twelve deadly labours of monster killing. Cat could see little chance of surviving this, without submitting to either Talitha or Julian.
The creature padded closer, stepping into the light. Oh, this was just swell. Just absolutely fantastic.
Stepping into the light was a giant lion.
Cat felt her jaw drop. The size of a family car, this thing oozed raw, animal power.
Cat gulped. She flicked her gaze up to Julian and Talitha. "I don't have a weapon." She croaked.Talitha grinned evily. "Why am I getting deja vu? Didn't you learn from wonderland? Why should I provide you with anything? Should have brought your own."
The lion roared and pounced at Cat. She dived, rolling through its legs. "Please, Talitha, a weapon, please!"
Talitha just smiled.
Cat cursed. She knew one sure way to get a weapon. Direct the question a few inches to Talitha's left, and she'd win for sure. And lose. Lose her friends, her home and her freedom. In some ways, that was worse than death.
She locked eyes with Julian, taking in his chilling gaze. A smile ghosted across his lips. He knew what she was thinking.Swiftly, Cat turned, resolve fixed, to face her opponent.
Just before anyone panics, I'm not gonna go into detail about each and every challenge. Probably just this one, and just sum up the others in a couple of lines. Do start to tell me if you think I've spent too many pages on this part, I only need like, four at most. (Probably not even that.)
