Cat laughed at this. It was a beautiful laugh, reminding Julian of fairy bells.
Julian crept forward and sat next to her on the bed. "Just a little, curious kitten!" He said, tickling her under the chin, making her laugh more.
"So then, what's a little kitten doing awake so late?"
"Don't wanna sleep."
Cat's demeanour had changed. Now she seemed insecure and small, huddled up on her bed. She looked scared.
Julian looked at her, concerned.
"Why don't you want to sleep?"
"Cause then bad things happen. That's when the fire happened, when we was asleep." The little girls face crumpled up as she broke down into sobs. "The fire came, a-and I couldn't get out, b-but Max, my bro-brother saved me, but then they couldn't save him. I miss him so much! I miss Max!" And she collapsed, sobbing into Julian's arms. "And now, the nightmares come, A-and it all happens again!
Julian was shocked that she was telling him this, that she was turning to him for comfort. He got the feeling that she was desperate for help, and somehow she had decided to trust him. But the sight of the small girl sobbing in his arms sparked some protective instinct in him, a desire to help her.
He set her back in her space next to him and wiped away her tears.
"Can I show you something, kitten?"
She rubbed her eyes and nodded. "Have you ever seen a blue diamond?"
She shook her head.
Julian called on his magic and summoned into his hand a small, ice blue, glowing gem.
"This is a blue diamond. A rare jewel believed by many cultures to protect the owner from harm."
He looked at the awe and wonder in her eyes, replacing the sadness. He smiled at her, in more of a kindly fashion that before and closed his hands over the jewel, a blue glow shinning through his pale fingers.
"Very rare, very valuable. And now... yours."
He opened his hands again, revealing the jewel now crafted into a small necklace. Silver vines wrapped around the small stone, which was now shaped slightly like a heart. He heard her give a small gasp as she looked at it, her eyes aglow with wonder.
"It'll help with the nightmares."
She smiled at him as she took it.
He smiled back, happy that she was happy.
"Now, I think its bedtime, don't you?"
She nodded, sleep weighing on her eyelids.
"Will I see you again?"
She asked in a small, sleepy voice.
"Maybe, kitten. Maybe."
