Valerian wandered along the road, singing to herself quietly to keep her spirits up. She didn't like being alone. It reminded her of being stone, trapped forever in a solid prison.
She shivered at the memory and continued on.
As she traveled onwards, she began to notice a chill growing in the air. She shivered again, this time from the cold.
Was it just her, or did everything seem to be turning grey?
She rubbed her eyes, blinking hard. It didn't change. In fact, now it was more obvious.
Smokey tendrils of grey mist crept from the foliage besides the path, winding it's way towards her in a think carpet, swallowing up everything before it.
Valerian sped up, trotting down the path, forcing herself not to panic.
"Mist. It's just mist. Just mist. It's not going to swallow up the land around you, and then swallow you up too, plunging you into a dark pit of grey nothing, an abyss from which you may never return, trapping you for all eternity...
It's just mist. Just mist."But everything was dark, so dark. She couldn't see for the mist, it smothered her vision and clogged her lungs with its grey nothingness.
Valerian felt the breath being forced out of her, as she stumbled and fell, the fog chocking her.
She had to do something! She couldn't die like this!
Blaze. He wouldn't want her to give up. Blaze. She could do it for Blaze.
Shakily, she climbed back onto her feet, pushing onwards with her quest. "Don't worry, Blaze, I'm coming! Your dragonfly girls coming!"
She tottered forwards and collapsed again, onto her hands. She couldn't do this.
But she had to.
"Dragonfly girl. I wonder...?"
Valerian could have hit herself. How could she not have thought of this earlier?
Swiftly, she unfurled her wings. Not strong enough for long flights, but definitely strong enough to fan mist out of her path.
She flapped them experimentally. Yes, it worked! Well, kinda. To clear her pathway, she was going to have to walk backwards, peering over her shoulder.
She shrugged, before turning around backwards to continue her journey.
It was lucky she had no pride.
