Cat could hear it behind her. Closer, and closer, and closer it came. She took of again, charging through the trees.
The beast moved fast, coming from many different angles, forcing her to change direction suddenly. She raced down the trail, avoiding the creature at all costs. She turned sharply and...
She slipped and rolled down a bank into a ditch. Mud splattered her clothes. She looked up to see glowing yellow eyes watching her from the top of the bank. The creature growled menacingly at her as she scrambled in the mud. But it didn't attack. Why didn't it attack?
Gently, Cat climbed up back up to face the wolf. It growled at her approach, but didn't spring.
She walked to the left, a way she hadn't yet gone. Nothing. It just watched her with its glowing eyes. She walked to the right. It growled slightly, but again, didn't react.
Then, taking a deep breath, she stepped back the way she'd run. The creature roared and pounced, landing in front of her, snarling at her.
Cat grinned.
It wasn't hunting. It was herding. Meaning, it was always steering her away from the path she needed to take.
Steeling her courage, she set off down the path, playing a strange game of chase with the wolf, as it danced around her heels, snapping and snarling.

Valerian half-ran, half-flew to get away from the wolf. The creature roared behind her as she raced and fluttered and scrambled and and flapped to get away. But it was always there, always close.
She turned down a muddy path, scrambling along what could only be an old river bed.
Something caught under her foot, sending her sprawling.
She looked up into the wolves glowing blue eyes and screamed.
But something triggered in the back of her mind.

"Wait a minute, the wolves eyes were yellow, not blue. Wait, blue eyes? Oh no."

She opened her eyes to reveal Julian, clad in black and sporting a black fur cape, leaning casually against a tree.
"Hello little Valerian."

She stuttered, trembling fearfully. "W-what do y-you w-want?"
Julian grinned widely. "Lots of things. But only one from you. Tell me, how much do you miss Blaze?"
"More than someone like you can ever know."
Julian's eyes flashed cruelly. "Don't bet on that." He growled.
Valerian whimpered.

He composed himself, smiling again, though this time it bore a cruel edge. "Yes, well, I'm pretty sure he'll be glad to hear that. Talitha's been taking such great care of him though, I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't think of you in quite the same way anymore." He smirked at her downcast face. "Don't be so sad. He had to choose one of you. And believe me, you seem to be very good at coming last."

Tears poured down Valerians face. "W-why do y-you tell m-me this? W-what do y-you w-want from m-me?"

Julian grinned wickedly. "I want you to know that however bad you think Talitha is, I'm worse. I want you to know, I could make your ex-lovers life a living hell, unless you do exactly as I say."
