Julian smiled wickedly at the trembling girl.
This was going to be easy.
He had her right where he wanted her.
"I'm assuming by now you know who Cat is?"
She nodded, timidly.
He continued. "Well, she's causing me a dilemma. I can't let her win. I don't want to let her win. But if she loses, my sister will take great enjoyment in making the rest of her existence a living hell. I don't want that either. You see my problem?"
"Couldn't you just make some kind of bargain with your sister about Cat?" Valerian said in a hoarse whisper.
"Did I ask for your advice?!" He snapped, expression turning harsh. "That'd make it worse! She'd want to know why I'm intervening, and then she'd hurt Cat all the more for it!"
Valerian's brow furrowed. "Why are you intervening?"
"None of your business!" Julian snarled.
"Oh." Valerian looked downcast. Then a look of understanding crept across her face. "Oh! Oh my god, your..."
"Don't say it. If you value your life, don't say it."
Valerian's eyes glistened cheekily. "So, the big, bad shadowman has a crush!"
Julian growled menacingly. "Your lucky I need you alive for now. Believe me, when the opportunity arises, I shall take great pleasure in killing you personally."
"Yeah, wouldn't want your girl to see you covered in blood. That'll make a great impression!"
"You know," said a thoroughly irritated Julian "on second thoughts, I can easily get someone else..."
"I'll behave, I'll behave."
Julian's smile returned. "Good girl. Now, all I need you to do is play delivery girl. All I need you to do is give Cat this."
He held out his hand. In it was a glistening dark red apple.
Valerian back peddled away. "No, I'm not giving her that. It's poisoned!"
Julian rolled his eyes. "Yes, I would go through all the trouble of betraying my sister, protecting Cat and blackmailing you just to kill her. If I wanted her dead, she'd be dead!"
"Then what's with the apple?" Valerian's voice shook.
"Me to know, you to find out." Julian smirked. "But believe me, this is definitely going to spice things up."
