Not Just A Fan - Josh Hutcherson

Chapter 30

Connor's POV.

"Yes!" I yell. I read over the text over and over again. She said yes! I'm actually going on a date with her! I can't believe it!

I text her back the details of the dinner. I'm going to take her to a fancy restaurant tomorrow. Apparently Mickey and her brother Eli, are coming too. I mean I can understand why she would want them there. It could be very awkward without them.

"Connor?" someone knocks on my door.

"Huh yeah come in!" Josh enters my room looking worried.

"What was the screaming about?" he asks. He looks really exhausted. He stays by the door the whole time.

"You'd never guess! I'm going on a date with Emma!"

His face immediately drops.

"Really?" he asks.

"Yeah." I'm kind of disappointed, I thought he would be happy for me.

"That's great Connor." he manages a smile but I can tell that it's fake.

"Josh what's wrong?" I ask.

"Nothing. I really am happy for you!" he says giving me a thumbs up.

"Thanks Josh."

"You should probably tell mom and dad about this you know." he says.

"Yeah yeah, are they home yet?"

"They just got home a couple of minutes ago."

"Can you call mom in here please?"

"Sure." he exits the room. I wonder what she will think of me going on a date with Emma. She doesn't know her anyways. A couple of minutes later she walks into the room.

"Connor!" she runs over to give me a hug.

"Hey mom!"

"How have you been? I know we haven't been home for a few days." she says.

"I've been good! How was Hawaii?" I ask.

"Amazing, beautiful. I can't believe we actually went."

"That's great mom!"

We sit in silence before she decides to speak up.

"What was it that you wanted to talk about?" she asks.

"Oh, um so there's this girl.." I begin while scratching the back of my neck.

"A girl! Really? Who is she? What's her name? How did you meet?" she asks excitedly.

"Mom," I groan. "Calm down. Her name is Emma." I say.

"Emma?" she seems to remember that name from somewhere.

"Yeah. Well you know, she was the one who let Josh in when his car broke down. And I guess he left his wallet at her house, so she came over to give it back. And that's sort of how we met." I explain leaving out some details.

"Oh! I knew that name sounded familiar! She seemed very nice."

"She is very nice, and beautiful, and just amazing in general." I say while thinking about her.

"Aww! I can tell that you really like her! But tell me this Connor, is Josh okay with this whole thing?" she asks. She places her hand on top of mine.

"Why wouldn't he be?"

"It's just..nothing never mind. When are you going on the date?" She changes topic. Weird.

"Tomorrow."

"Well I'm glad you're happy! I have to meet her sometime!"

"I'm sure you will." she smiles again before leaving.

Josh's POV.

He's going on a date. With Emma. I should be extremely happy for him. I should just let all these feelings go before I fall too deep. I should be supportive.

There are so many things I should be feeling. Why is it hard to let one girl go? She clearly likes him now if she's going to a date with him. I still remember that first day we met. How excited, and happy she was to see me. When she said that I was her idol. And when she kissed my cheek before she ran back into the house. I will never forget when we kissed during spin the bottle.

I think about this all while laying in bed. I need to get my mind off of her. Somehow.

There's a knock on the door a minute later.

The door's unlocked you can come in." I say sullenly.

"Hey Joshie." mom walks in and closes the door behind her.

"Hey."

She sits next to me.

"Are you okay?" she asks.

"Why wouldn't I be?"

"Connor told me about him going on a date with Emma."

"Oh."

"What happened? I thought she liked you? Remember when she kissed your cheek? I thought you might have liked her." I can picture everything she says clearly.

"She's just a fan. That's all she'll ever be. Nothing more." I state.

"Josh come on I saw the way you looked at her."

"Mom! She's just a fan! I could never go out with a fan even if I wanted to!" I yell immediately regretting it.

"I'm sorry." I apologize.

"Don't worry about it. I'll always be here for you okay hun? Get some sleep okay?"

"I know. Thank you." I give her a quick hug before she decides to get up and leave.

How could I ever say that? Emma is not just a fan. She's more than a fan. But I know that nothing will ever happen between us.

I just need a distraction...
