Episode Five
"This is not how it's suppose to go." Mary Jo didn't try to contain her sob as it burst through her.
"I know Mary Jo, I know. You just want to talk to your husband." I take a deep breath, before removing my shield from my back pocket. "My name is Jethro, Jethro Howards, and I'm a detective alright. I'll bring him over to you, okay? Okay? I'll bring him over here, but I need you to do two things for me okay."
She nods slowly, avoiding eye contact with me.
"I need you to keep your hands where I can see them. Okay? I'll bring him over here, okay?" I take another small step forward, "Let's work together okay, let's work together."
She lifts her hands higher, "What's the second thing?"
"I need you to put the detonator on the dashboard." She starts to get angry, but I'm quick to speak over her. "Just put it on the dashboard, and keep your hands where I can see them okay?"
Mary Jo considers it for a moment, before slowly reaching forward and holding the detonator over the dashboard. "I put this down, and you go get my husband."
I nod, before making a verbal confirmation.
"Promise me." She starts to pull the detonator closer to her. "Promise me!"
"I promise! I promise." I spoke quickly, and incorrectly. I shouldn't have promised, but the second those words leave my mouth she sets the detonator down. I take a few steps back, holstering my weapon, and acting as though I was going to get her husband. I keep my eyes locked on both of her hands, and before she could even process what was going on I lept at the vehicle.
I wrap an arm around both of hers and yank her from inside the vehicle. A stray elbow catches my in the temple, but I slam her to the ground, grabbing both of her wrists and holding them together.
"You promised!" She screams these words over and over again, writhing on the ground as she tries to escape. As I reach to grab my cuffs one of her hands slip free, it was a lucky shot, but a shot none the less. Her left caught me across the face in a terrible version of a left hook, but it was enough to knock me off balance in my crouched form. My head knocks against the side of the car hard enough to make my eyes blurry for a second but I don't let it stop me. I catch her hand again locking them in the cuffs and dragging her to her feet.
I pass her off to the other officers quickly, pressing a hand to the side of my head and groaning as it comes away with a little blood on the palm. "You wanker." I mutter, sending a glare to Mary Jo.
The next half hour was a bit of a blur, the bomb squad took the car apart quickly, my small head lac was dealt with, and the mayor showed up. He shook hands in front of the press with both Danny and I, and I got to officially meet the son. Jacob and his dad were sitting together on the edge of the ambulance, both answering questions from officers when I has a word with the boy. He asked to pet Kenai, and I was quick to leave her with Jacob to calm him down.
When I walked back over to Danny he had a bit of a smile on his face.
"So," he nudges me, "the great Detective Inspector Howards has a soft spot for kids."
"I won't deny it." I say with a smile, looking back at the boy and dog. "Besides, Kenai likes them just as much."
He laughs from the chest, throwing his head back and shaking his shoulders as he does. I laugh a bit, no where near as loud, but just a little. As I do I notice a black dark window Humvee make it's way into the park, and to my surprise, out steps the Police Commissioner.
"Well well well," Danny says as he leads the way to his dad, "Sir." He nods his head to his dad, and I could nearly laugh at the sight.
"Congratulations Detective, Detective Inspector." He shakes both of our hands, before asking after the small laceration on my head.
"Already been cleared sir, small bruise and cut from hitting the car." He nods, and turns his attention to his son, instantly giving him grief for everything in a mostly playful way.
I tried to concentrate on what they were saying, but my head went fuzzy. I could feel myself swaying as the words began to jumble up in my head. I looked to Danny, only to find him already looking and talking at me. I tried to hear what he was saying, but I could only catch a few words. Dog, nuts, why.
Dog, nuts, why.
Dog, nuts, why.
Dog, nuts, why.
I shook my head, trying to rid the fuzziness but that was a terrible idea. Suddenly the ground was moving and I was rushing to meet it. A hand grabbed my coat, a hand fell off of my coat, and I was shaking on the ground.
Everything went dark, and I was still shaking.
