Season Three, Episode Twenty-Two

"Can't you just drink coffee like an American?" Danny wrinkled his nose at the cup of tea in my hand and I shook my head.

"Not an American," or at least not fully  I started to add, but glanced through the window of the car instead. "You're suppose to be watching the door not me." I mutter as I take a sip from my cup.

"I've been watching." Danny was like a child when it came to stake outs, constantly bored and in need of something exciting. "There's nothing but dirtbags walking into a bar."

I shook my head, shuffling in my seat before motioning to the bar. I reminded him that Santana worked all of his business in from this bar, and that he should just relax and keep his eyes peeled.

Three weeks ago there was a scare on the job, a bit of miscommunication between the two of us. He thought I would be home, I was doing a night shift, he panicked called me a dozen times, I tried calling him back. It was just a lot all at once. We had made a promise then and there that we would call or text or get in contact somehow so we knew the other was safe.

Jameson had called me two hours ago before we started staking out the bar, he was alright, and was stopping by his flat to get a change of clothes and work in a quick nap before going in for overtime. I mentioned the stakeout, and that I would call him when I was headed home.

"Woah!" I smacked Danny's shoulder, immediately ignoring the shout of annoyance that he gave and instead pointing his attention at the front door of the bar. "There's Nona, and she's getting into Santana's car."

I was in the drivers seat, and as I slowly started to pull forward to follow Nona to wherever she was headed I motioned for Danny to duck his head. The girl had seen Danny before, though it was a long time ago, there was still the chance of recognition.

It wasn't a long following, rather, it was disappointingly short.

Nona drove five blocks before making a left, another three before making a right, and then pulled behind a warehouse with tires squealing. I followed at a much slower pace, and as I rounded the corner of the warehouse Danny was quick to voice our shared confusion when the car was gone.

People started to pile out of the building, there appearance startled me at first but I didn't let it affect me, I opened my car door in a hurry, stepping out of the way for Kenai to hop out and walking around to the front of the car.

"That's far enough!" Danny shouted, his hand sitting on his weapon.

I pulled mine from it's holster, muttering to Kenai about holding beside me. She growled, teeth on full display and re-acting at every step any of Santana's soldiers took.

"It's funny running into you here, Detectives." Santana's voice was exactly how I had pictured it, low and smooth, the kind that sends a shiver down your spine and makes you feel as though an attack were about to happen.

"This suppose to scare me?" I called, walking a few more steps closer with Kenai at my side.

"Not at all Detective Inspector Howards." I didn't expect him to know me, and the fact that he did was meant to send a veiled threat to both Danny and I. "It's meant to educate you."

I just hummed, nodding sarcastically as I waited for him to continue.

"Los Lordes, we run things around here in the Bitter End. That's the way it is, that's the way it's been, and that's the way it's gonna stay.

"Well, I've got some bloody bad news for you then." I retorted, appearing more confident than I felt. I stood tall, "Times are changing in the Bitter End, and if you don't watch yourself, you'll be forced out."

Santana snorted, looking over at whatever foot soldier was next to him. He took a step towards the three of us, Kenai's growls grew louder.

"Last warning, Detective Inspector." He put emphasis on the title. "You need to back off."

"Well, bub," I no longer felt threatened by the man, and I showed this by holstering my weapon. "Backing off really isn't in my nature."

"Final answer?" Santana asked, I could see Danny nod out of the corner of my eye. I copied the movement. "Then war it is."

All of Santana's men were gone just as quickly as they arrived, and the second they dust from their cars had settled I relaxed with a loud sigh and turned to Danny.

He had this sort of astonished smile.

"Family dinner then?" Danny offered and I snorted, nodding and motioning for him to get in the car.

Then war it is.
