Season Three, Episode Twenty-Two
I stuffed my hands in my pockets as I approached the police tape, Kenai's leash handing loosely on my wrist, as I trusted that Danny would life the tape up for me. He did, and we paused, taking in the sight of the officers and EMS workers milling about.
"Jamie's here." Danny muttered, pointing at his brother who stood across the way.
"You talk to him, I'll take a look at the body." I knew that Danny would be affected more, though he acted like he wouldn't be. I nodded to Danny, before starting towards the body.
Helicopter blades sounded as I made my way, I glanced around, noting the people sitting at their windows watching what was going on.
"Hey Detective." A distinctly Brooklyn accent came from beside me and I lurched out of my daze, grimacing and nodding to the officer next to me. He joined me as I walked towards the body, and I paused in my step, offering my hand to the officer next to me.
"Detective Inspector Jethro Howards." I waited for him to shake my hand, waiting for him to offer his name.
"Officer Vincent Cruz," He smiled a charming smile, "Friends call me Vinny."
"Oh!" I smiled as I made the connection, "You're Jameson's work partner."
"That's me." We continued towards the body, as he kept talking. "Which makes you his everyday partner." Vinny seemed to feel awkward as he said it, and I nodded my head from side to side.
"You can call me his boyfriend if you'd like." I joked, before sighing when we stopped next to the body. "Kenai, asseyez-vous s'il vous plaît." I muttered, and she listened, taking a seat as I offered the leash to Officer Cruz to hold. "How are you holding up Officer Cruz?"
"Vinny, please." He sighed, "I'm alive."
"Yeah?" I asked, hearing his hum of confirmation. I lifted the tarp from over the woman's body, blanching slightly at the sight. "You're from around here aren't you?"
"Yeah." I could see him absentmindedly petting at Kenai's head as I continued to look over the body. "You're not." It was a comically flat reply and I just shook my head.
"I am actually," It seemed as though my London accent stuck out a bit more as I replied to him. "Born in Manhattan, moved when I was a kid.
Vinny nodded, looking as though he wanted to ask something else but getting distracted by something in the sky. I stood trying to see what he was seeing.
"What are you looking at?" I asked, Vinny shook his head as he offered the leash back.
He changed the subject, "What you're gonna find is, the gang, the gang that runs this place, they got a mute button they can push."
"What'll they call themselves?" I asked.
"Los Lordes."
Those two words seemed to set off those looking at us from their windows. Shouting started and the sounds of bottles breaking sounded from all around me.
"Detective!" Vinny reached for me, grabbing my arm and starting to pull me away but it was to late, a bottle smashed into the side of my head and I yelped, ducking my head and covering it with my arm. The bottles stopped and when I took a second to raise my head.
Vinny had taken a knee, his arm over the top of Kenai's head. He looked up, standing at seconds after me. People had continued to shout but it didn't seem directed at the police anymore. I followed the pointing of everyone and glared as someone approached the police tape.
"Who the bloody hell is that?" I asked, though I had a feeling that he had something to do with the gang that runs the place.
"Santana." Vinny seemed to spit the name, "That's the leader of the Lordes right there. It's the head of the snake."
The man looked around the crowd of officers in a slow lazy way before lifting his hands and holding up his fingers in the shape of two 'L's'.
Vinny spoke, answering the question that I hadn't yet asked. "He's showing us who's boss."
I nodded, my hand drifting to my weapon on my hip but the man turned away and walked off without doing anything else. The air was tense as Vinny and I watched Santana go. Vinny looked at me, wincing in sympathy as he motioned to my head.
"You got a little something there." He muttered, and I reached up, pressing a hand to the dull throb that had started in my forehead. My hand came away red and I groaned, more in annoyance than anything else. "Let's get you looked at."
Vinny kept Kenai's leash in his hand as he led the way to the ambulance over to the side.
"Thank you, for covering Kenai." I muttered, patting my pockets for a tissue or something to press to my forehead.
"Couldn't get to you, wouldn't be able to forgive myself if the dog got hit." Vinny snorted when he finished talking and I thanked him one more time before waving at Danny and Jameson as I approached them.
"What happened?" Jameson looked as though he wanted to run at me and run his fingers through my hair, my favorite form of greeting from him, but he stopped himself.
"Not-so-stray bottle." I replied, taking a seat on the edge of the ambulance as an EMS worker flitted over me, taking a look at my forehead. I offered my left hand to Jameson and he took it with a small sigh.
I smiled up at him, it was a different angle than what I was use to, but I appreciate any angle of my beautiful boyfriend.
My thoughts strayed to the woman and baby who had just stepped off of a building, something felt familiar about the woman's face, though I felt it might just be from as many years on the job. Danny looked worried, but that could just be his face. The EMS worker patted my shoulder as she finished and I smiled in thanks, stepping away as she closed up shop and drove away.
"Right then," I accepted Kenai's leash from Vinny and motioned towards the car for Danny. He nodded, waving goodbye before heading in that direction. "Thank you Vinny, it was a pleasure to meet you."
Vinny smiled, replying the same before turning and walking away.
Jameson's hand stayed in mine as he stepped in front of me and I smiled down at him.
"Stay safe my love." I glanced around the circle of police tape and people before pressing a quick kiss to his forehead.
His hand tightened around mine. "I love you babe."
I pulled his hand to my chest, before turning away and heading towards the car. Danny had his elbow propped up against the car and his head sat on his hand, he had a knowing smile and I flipped him off before tossing the keys across the top of the car and letting Kenai in the back.
He was laughing when I got in the car, but I ignored it, glancing at Jameson as Danny drove off.
