Season Three, Episode Twenty-Two
There's something different about sleeping by yourself when your boyfriends a police officer. There's more anxiety to falling asleep, more worry. Jameson had been assigned night shifts for the past few nights, which neither of us liked.
It took me hours to fall asleep, and then my phone started to ring.
The worst way anyone can wake up is, at least in my opinion, is to a phone call.
The terrible piercing noise of a ringer that never seems to bring bad news more times than good. I stared up at the ceiling, letting the call ring once, twice. I sent a prayer upwards, before reaching over and answering the call.
"Hullo?" I leaned forward, pressing my hand into my forehead as I waited for whoever it was to speak, suddenly fully awake and worried as could be. Kenai perked up from beside me on the bed, her head landing on my calf in an attempt to comfort me.
"We got a case." Danny took a minute to speak, and when he did it was like a weight was lifted off of my chest. I relaxed, dropping my head and letting it hit the pillow.
"Danny I swear to God." I muttered, my voice muffled by the pillows and blankets. I sat up, sighing loudly. "I thought you were calling with bad news."
I could hear his sigh on the other end of the line, and practically see him rub his forehead in frustration. "Sorry J, I keep forgetting."
"'s alright." It wasn't, but I didn't want to have to deal with Danny's attempt at an apology. "Where do I need to go?"
Danny yawned loudly, and I knew that he had just gotten up. "I'm five minutes out from your apartment," flat, I wanted to correct but didn't. "I'll fill you in when you get in the car."
"See you." I muttered, before hanging up and standing from my bed. I stretched my hands above my head, rolling out my back and wincing at all the cracking that came. Kenai hopped down, landing next to me and stretching just as widly. "Time to go to work."
Kenai pranced out of the bedroom and I followed, dumping a scoop and a half of food into Kenai's bowl and starting the coffee pot before hurrying back into my room and getting changed.
I was nearly dressed, just buttoning the last few buttons on my shirt when the sound of clinking sounded from the kitchen. For a second I wrote it off as Kenai messing with something she shouldn't but it continued to sound and I froze like a dear in headlights.
My on-duty weapon was in my night table, and I reached for it, clipping the holster to my belt as well as my badge. I moved into the hallway, walking towards the kitchen cautiously as I still wasn't quite sure what was making the noise.
"You should keep your key in a different spot, under the mat is so cliche." Danny had half of a cold slice of pizza in his mouth when I stepped into my kitchen, and I sighed, relaxing and moving towards the coat rack.
"The front door is locked." I reasoned.
"Your landlady let me in." Danny retorted, finishing off the slice of pizza in three bites before wiping his hand on the tea towel by the stove.
I pulled my jacket on, before pulling my coat over the jacket and checking the pockets for my gloves and Kenai's leash.
"What have we got?" I motioned for Danny to leave before going out the door myself. Kenai followed and I locked up.
"Jumped, took her kid over the edge too. Bitterman Houses, twenty minute drive." Danny smiled over his shoulder, throwing the car keys into the air and I caught them with an easy hand. "You can get us there in ten."
I smiled brightly, hurrying around to the other side of the car and letting Kenai hop in the back. Danny snorted at my excitement, and when I climbed into the front seat he was already braced in the passenger.
"Oh come off it, I'm not that bad." I muttered, before starting the car and hitting the gas pedal with a small smile. We took off into the street and I could tell that Danny didn't particularly like how quick I was driving. "This is how I feel when you drive."
Danny snorted, "Hardly."
It was quite between the two of us, and I could tell he was still working on waking up. "There's chocolate espresso beans in the door. I stuffed them there after our last tour." I offered, and he immediately went looking for them. He made a noise of excitement when he found them and I smiled, holding my hand out for a few.
He passed them over and I continued looking at the road. I heard them crunch in his mouth and he instantly made a noise of disgust.
"They're awful." The package rustled again, and I could hear him eat a few more. "Why do I like them?" He mumbled, continuing to eat the espresso beans.
I smiled, keeping my focus on the road.
The car was silent, save for Kenai's light snoring and the rustling of the chocolate package.
I couldn't really think about anything, my mind was wrapped up in keeping the wheel steady as I drove. I breathed in and out, pulling the car to a rolling stop in between two police cars and glancing at the clock. Danny was right about the getting us there in ten minutes, and as I got out of the car I made sure the keys ended up in my pocket.
Kenai hopped out, pausing beside me so I could hook her leash to her collar before Danny and I stepped towards the police line.
