Season Two, Episode Nineteen
It took Danny and I fourteen minutes to convince Sargent Gormley to re-open the case, which was a new record for the pair of us, but slow compared to when I approach Gormley alone.
We only got it on account that Carney had verbally threatened and admitted to threatening to kill Keenan, though Danny and I both agreed that he did not do it in the end. This was further affirmed when Carney told us about an inspector that he wanted to bribe and that Keenan wanted nothing to do with.
"I think we should bring this guy Reid in." Danny muttered, I could just barely see him between the papers on his desk, but I could see him scratching at Kenai's ears.
I nodded, "What's your theory?" Though I had a feeling I knew it already. "You think Reid killed him?"
"I don't know. Maybe."
"Maybe Keenan went to meet Reid, to try and get the house approved or what not, and when he told Reid he wouldn't pay, he killed him." I reached towards the bottom drawer, removing my weapon before standing. "I'll give Reid a call, say about finishing the job, before offering a bribe. You can play contractor."
Danny snorted, before standing and clipping Kenai's leash on her, passing her over to me. "You play contractor." I looked at him, "You've got more experience undercover."
And I actually laughed, out loud, and in a snorting-sort-of-way. It took Danny a minute to join me, but he was just as loud, and the time it took to make the pair of us to stop was nearly obscene.
"I can't believe you." My voice had a tone of mock hurt, and I smiled while speaking, he shook his head, giving my shoulder a shove before starting towards the back door. I continued to the back door, pulling my phone out and starting to dial the number for Reid. He didn't answer, which I was expecting.
"This is Reid with Building Inspectors of New York, leave a message after the tone and I'll get back to you as soon as possible." The tone sounded, and I spoke firmly.
"This is Jett Howards, I am taking over the Keenan and Carney project in Manahattan North, and need to schedule a C of O Inspection for later today or early morning." I shared my email and phone number, before hanging up. I made sure to keep an eye on the cars passing by before crossing the street. I let Kenai off leash, watching as she ran around to do her business.
I stood bouncing from foot to foot as the wind started to blow, already regretting the fact that I did not bring my coat along with me. I whistled once, hoping Kenai would come running.
She did not.
But my phone did start to ring. I checked the number before answering with an excited smile. "Jameson, I wasn't expecting to hear from you until-"
"Hello babe," Jameson spoke quickly, interrupting me. I smiled at his enthusiasm. "I have news."
"Enlighten me my love." I smiled, still keeping an eye out for Kenai, but not seeing her just yet.
"I," he put emphasis on the word, "ran into a burning building and saved a child!"
The words shot a pang of anxiety through me, but I pushed it away, immediately asking for the story behind it all. Jameson shared the story quickly, though his voice turned to coughing many times, not helping to squash the anxiety I had. He and Renzuli had stopped for late afternoon snack as Renzuli called it, when they heard someone shouting about a fire. He and Renzuli ran towards it, helping everyone out of the building, before he ran in to get the a boy that was stuck on the second floor.
"Jett, the feeling of this mother wrapping her arms around me and telling me how much she loved me was wonderful." He sighed happily, "This is one of the reasons why I became an officer."
"I am very proud of you Jameson, and I am glad you are alright." I felt like my heart was melting from his excitement, Jameson continued to say about how he was alright when Kenai came prancing up. I hummed along with his words, clipping Kenai's leash on her collar.
"Jett."
I hummed, waiting for him to speak as I started back towards the road again.
"Jett."
I hummed once again, watching for the right opportunity to cross the road.
"Jett, babe, honey," I stopped what I was doing, standing up straight, before speaking.
"Jameson?" I asked, he sounded like he wanted to talk about something specific. "What is it?"
"Do you want kids?"
I hummed, to show him I had understood the question, before I really started to think about it. I passed across the road, wondering if I really did. I had never really thought about it before. As a gay man, I had thought about having my own kids because of the obvious reason of my sexuality, but I had never considered if I even wanted them in the first place.
"Well," I started to say, but stopped, thinking about it once again. The idea of being a father was exciting, and I gave my answer honestly. "I had never thought about it before my love, but I think so yes."
"Really?"
"Really." I could only assume his answer, but just as I started to ask, he started speaking.
"I have to go babe, but I'll see you tonight?" I don't think I will ever get past him using a pet name on me.
"Tonight, of course." I smiled, though it felt sort of sad. "I love you."
He hung up before I could finish, but I didn't mind. Jameson knew that I loved him. I stepped back into the precinct, a ding from my phone alerted me to the fact that I had received an email. All it said was that the man Reid could do 8 o'clock tomorrow morning and if that didn't work for me I'd need to wait until next week. I replied back saying four would work, and that was that.
