Season Two, Episode Five
"Make sure you grab an umbrella love." I called to Jameson as I walked out of my room, pulling on my coat as I went. "There's one by the door."
I came around the corner, grabbing two thermos' of coffee, before continuing to the front door. Jameson grabbed it, turning to look at me with a skeptical look. "There isn't a cloud in the sky."
I hand Jameson a thermos, leaning down to kiss him on his cheek, before passing him out the door. "Trust me Jameson, Londoners know rain." He snorts, but walks out with the umbrella anyways. I trek down the stairs, holding the bottom door open for him to pass through. Kenai followed a moment later, and I locked up behind me.
"I'll see you tonight right?" Jameson asked, and I nodded. He grabbed me by my collar, pulling me down a bit and kissing me firmly on the lips.
"I'll see you then love." I watch as he walks to his car climbing in, before I do the same with my own. I let Jameson pull away first, and just as I start in the opposite direction my phone starts to ring. "Renzuli." I answer, continuing to drive down the street. "What can I help you with?"
"That phone we gave you last week, it keeps getting a call from a Noble Sanfino." I nodded even though I knew he couldn't see it. "I have someone dropping it at the 5-2 this morning."
"Understood. Thank you Renzuli." I hung up my phone, sticking it back into my coat pocket, and driving to the precinct.
I was still considering my footing in the Sanfino case. There was so much about it that I didn't want to help in taking down something as big as this, but I didn't want to ruin what I had. I knew that whatever it was, Jameson would understand, but I didn't want to put him in a difficult situation.
I pulled into a parking spot, turning my car off and stepping out. Kenai hopped out after me, sitting still while I reached into the back to grab my backpack. "Detective Howards?" I turned, looking for the origin of the voice. A uniformed officer approached me, her lapel displaying that she worked at the 1-2.
"Detective Inspector," I corrected, "What can I help you with Officer?"
"Sargent Renzuli sent me, this is for you." She passes a black box across to me, and once I realize it's the phone from last week I accept it. I mutter a thank you, tucking it into my pocket. "Once you finish with it, send it back to the 1-2."
I nod, letting her walk away before I continue into the back door of the precinct. "We got anything Danny?" I asked as I walked to my desk, he looked up, shaking his head as I set my backpack down.
"No, gladly." Danny said, looking up at me.
"Oh?"
"Yeah, Linda and I are going for a romantic weekend. Now I don't need to worry about a case." I nodded along, pulling a few folders out of my backpack and setting them down on my desk. My phone started to ring, and when I pulled it out, I realized it was the other phone.
"Hullo?" I answered it, working on pulling my coat off as I waited for whoever it was to speak.
The voice laughs, and I wonder for a moment who it was. "Oh, I had almost given up on you."
"Whose this?" I asked, even though I was pretty sure I knew who it was.
"Only a guy who owes you his life." I smiled a fake smile, trying to get excited, like I was waiting to hear from him.
"Noble." I wasn't sure if my voice was convincing enough.
"Alvie!" He spoke excitedly, "How are you man?"
"Brilliant, all things considering." I turned away from my desk, rubbing the back of my head as I continued. "What about you mate?"
"Long story short, just got out of thirty days in rehab. But it's like the whole worlds in high-def." Suddenly one of the other cops brings in a perp, and the guy shouts loudly about wanting a lawyer. I act quickly, speed walking into another section of the precinct, and covering my phone speaker. "Where are you?" He asks.
"The Underground. I'm gonna loose you." I was quick to come up with a lie, but realized that I had used the wrong terminology.
"All right, real quick, reason I called," Noble's voice faded for a minute, before it came back. "I want you to come out to dinner on Saturday night. We've got a new chef at my restaurant, doing a soft opening, big dinner, friends, family."
I nodded, trying to think of a good lie to put him off. "Uh, tomorrow?" I could see Danny looking at me through the window and I waved him off as Noble continued.
"Man, I been trying to call you all week." He put emphasis on the words 'all week,' and I made an 'ahuh' sound.
"Thing is, I got a thing, tomorrow."
"Well move it." He sounded like he wasn't sure my intentions. "Look, I want to say thank you, and so does my family." The way he said the back of it all made it sound flirtatious, and I hoped to everything that I was just reading to much into it.
"All right, Iook, I'll see what I can do." I said, rubbing my forehead trying to think everything through.
"Great man, I'll call you later." He hung up before I could respond, and I groaned, considering all sides of this. I stepped out of the back of the precinct, walking over to my desk and starting to put my stuff back into my back pack.
"What was that about?" Danny asked, watching as I packed up.
I sighed, shaking my head. "I don't know yet, I need to figure things out first, but I'll let you know." I slid my backpack on my shoulder, "Danny, have fun at your weekend getaway, alright?"
"What you think your not coming around here again?"
"No way, anything to get away from you." Danny laughed, and I smiled, "Really though, see you Sunday okay?"
He nodded, saying the same, and I left the same way I came in. I tossed my backpack in the back, letting Kenai into the front seat, and starting the car. As I pulled away, I dialed Frank's One PP number.
"Commissioner Reagan's office, this is Detective Baker how can I help? " She had her 'customer service' voice on, and I could tell that she was ready for the weekend.
"Hey Baker. It's Jett Howards, what's his afternoon look like?" There wasn't anyone else that I'd rather talk to about all of this than Frank.
"Hello Jett! " She says excitedly, and I could hear her flip through a few pieces of paper. "He's not too busy for the next few hours, how much should I block off for you? "
"Oh, half an hour, maybe an hour." I respond, clicking my blinker on. "See you soon Baker."
"See you soon Jett."
