Season Three, Episode Twelve
Jameson was working a night shift, so I didn't get to personally tell him the good news after Danny dropped me off at home last night. I was officially re-instated, which meant I had possession of my gun and shield, and could go back to work on Monday.
I was headed to family dinner, when I suddenly remembered Kenai. Not that I ever really forgot about the fact that I didn't have her with me. It was really different without her clicking around the flat, and I'd be glad to have her back, which probably means waiting until tomorrow.
And as I pulled up to the house, I really hoped she wasn't getting herself more attached to whoever her handler was at the moment.
The car door slammed shut behind me, and I waved a bit at the neighbor who was working on his yard as I walked towards the door. It was unlocked, as usual, and as I opened it I caught the amazing smell that was coming from the kitchen.
"Something smells bloody fantastic." I announced as I stepped into the kitchen.
"Uncle Jett!" Sean shouted as he saw me, running towards me and throwing his arms around my waist.
"Hey kid." I smiled down at him, hugging him a bit before he stepped away and ran off again.
"That would be the desert." Henry appeared beside me as I watched Sean run off.
I nodded, turning to start moving the plates and bowls and such to the table. "So Wojick pulled through with the chocolate cheesecake?"
"And some kolaches." Henry followed just behind me as we both headed into the dining room. Nearly the entire family was sitting at the table, and I smiled at everyone as I sat the plates down.
"Well, I don't care if he threw in a hundred dollar bill. I'm not eating his stuff." Jameson announced, pulling my chair out a bit for me as I moved around to it.
"Oh come on love," I passed behind him as I spoke, before sitting down and kissing his cheek as I sat down. "I almost went to prison over this cheesecake, it better be the best thing I've ever tasted."
Jameson bobbled his head side to side, and reached for my hand. "Maybe."
Everyone started to settle in their seats, and I suddenly realized that Frank wasn't here just yet. I looked around the table and noticed that everyone looked unconcerned. The sound of the back door opening alerted me to someone else walking in.
"Sorry I'm late," Frank shouted from the kitchen. "I had to pick something up."
His voice was quieter as he spoke the second half of his sentence, and as I turned I realized that he had stepped into the dining room.
Kenai's leash in hand.
"Kenai!" I shouted, standing from my seat and falling to my knees in one motion. Frank let her off leash and she practically tackled me in her hurry for me to pet her. I could hear the family chuckling as I scratched at her and muttered under my breath, "Tu m'as tellement manqué, joli chiot."
"Not that this isn't a great scene, but I'm starving." Danny piped up.
"Me too." A few others chimed in, and I shook my head as I stood. I took a seat at my seat again, and Kenai took a seat just behind it, splaying out and getting comfortable.
"Thank you Frank."
Frank waved off my thank you as he took his seat at the end of the table. "But back to Jamie." Frank leaned on the table, looking at Jameson in a firm way. "What do you have against him?"
Jameson sighed, looking across the table at his dad before responding. "He lied right to my face about Jett being there."
"Really?" I asked, smiling in a knowing way. Jameson had told me that the family couldn't do anything to help, not that I expected them too.
"I mean, no." Jameson looked over at me, trying to cover up what he was saying. "He, uh, he lied to somebody."
I hummed, nodding as I turned to face the two boys in front of me. I rolled my eyes at them and they both giggled. The table started to settled, before I spoke again.
"You know, now that I think about it, there are some things I haven't been able to pin together. Like the bill I received, from a-" I paused, pulling the envelope out of my pocket and reading the name on it, "Jack Boyle? Who I don't know, for legal services rendered? You know, I don't even remember talking to a lawyer."
I glanced around the table, and Henry groaned. "He wasn't suppose to send it to you." I smiled, turning to look at Henry. "How much this shyster gouging me for."
I looked at the paper again, before handing it over to Henry. He pulled his glasses out from his pocket, and starting to read the paper. He smiled.
"What does he want?" Erin sounded annoyed, and I connected the dots. This was the ex-husband that I had heard so little about.
"A dinner date, with you, Jamie, Jett, and Nicki." Henry said it with a chuckle, passing the paper back to me.
"You know, no offense Danny, but I'm still confused how you connected all the dots." Danny looked instantly offended, and Linda laughs.
"I am one hell of a cop." Danny is quick to inform me, and I nod, waiting for the next big reveal.
"And how did you connect Elwood to Saul Ward?" I asked, and Jameson snickered as he looked down at the table. He reaches for my hand and I hold his tightly. I looked at Frank and he quickly put his hands in the air in a symbol of innocence.
"Hey, I stayed a million miles away." I nodded, waiting for Frank to continue. "Garret'll vouch for that."
"I'm sure." I nodded, smiling at the table. "Well, thank you anyways. All of you."
A chorus of 'your welcome' came from all the way around the table, even from the three kids who probably had nothing to do with all of this.
"Let's eat."

I'm so sorry that this update was way late. All those technical difficulties threw me off schedule.
