Episode Two
"How'd you do new guy?" Gormley was there the second we came out, already making a joke at my expense. Not that I even remotely minded, it's not even a low blow or anything.
"Didn't get anything more than what he already told channel 10." I mutter, Kenai pauses beside the three of us as I look over my shoulder at the man in the box.
"Ya know except for the part where he doesn't trust cops to give him a fair chance." Danny replies, rubbing the back of his neck as he does. "He says he tossed the gun, but between the confession and the video, we got our case.
"Reagan you process the Samaritan. Howards, the wife's here." Gormley dismisses the two of us, and I nod as I walk away. Kenai follows one step behind me, the sound of her nails clicking loudly on the ground as we go.
The officers and detectives we pass nod as a sign of respect to me, a few offer greetings to me or to Kenai, but most just nod and walk on. When I reach the front of the precinct, an officer approaches me, pointing out a woman sitting on the plastic chairs off to the side.
"That's Young's wife-- she's been waiting to talk to him for hours." The officer sighs, shaking her head as she does.
"Poor bastard." I mutter, thinking only of the man sitting in the other room and the situation he's in. I start to walk towards the woman, but at the call of another officer I stop.
"Detective, some kid outside wants to talk to you, and they won't come inside."
"Thank you officer Fredric." I look down at Kenai, and consider her for a moment, before giving her a command. "Va et reste avec dieu est mon juge."
She nudges me once, before walking back into the main area of the precinct. I nod to Danny across through the space between the two of us, I got it, he mouths back to me. I wait for Kenai to sit next to Danny before changing directions and walking out the front door. As soon as I stepped through the double door I regretted not grabbing my jacket, the cold wind cut through my thin button up easily. I was quick to wrap my arms around my torso as I approached Denise.
"I saw the guy who shot Lee talking about it on the news." Her voice sounds flat, and when we make eye contact I can tell she's obviously upset, and I felt terrible for her.
"Yes Denise, I know, but--"
"Look, I'm not trying to blame him. He was standin' up to Handsome even though he was afraid." She smiles sadly as she speaks, "I thought about that, and I thought about what you said, Lee didn't even want to run with them."
That was news to me, from all I could understand the kid was all in when it came to the gang. "Then why did he?"
"Bunch of Handsome's crew got locked up, so he started looking for new blood." Denise mutters, looking over her shoulder as she continues. "Lee's friend Dante got him started with the crew. Lee was afraid to say no, cause they put another guy in the hospital for saying no. Lee said that he joined cause Dante was there."
"Alright Denise, alright, do you know where they are?"
"Hell yeah, I know where all those boys stay." Denise was quick to answer, she handed me a small piece of paper with an address scribbled on it. I thank her multiple times before hurrying back inside. Danny was sitting at his desk on the phone when I got in, his left hand was twisted in Kenai's fur as he absentmindedly scratched the top of her head. I put the card on his desk and mouth the word 'Handsome' to him and he's quick to hang up.
"Where'd ya get this from?" He asks, starting to look it up in the computer while I lean against the desk next to him.
"Denise, Lee's cousin."
Danny makes a noise in surprised acknowledgement, before picking up his phone and dialing quickly. "Grab the vests." he mutters before speaking with whoever is on the other end of the phone. I nod, clicking my tongue and calling Kenai to me, I clip the leash to her collar before leading her from the room. Danny already told me that usually he keeps a few lighter-weight vests in the trunk of his unmarked car, but when we plan for a raid he likes to get the heavier police-issued ones.
I smiled at the few officers I passed in a hurry, and stopped at the desk. The clerk barely looked up when I stopped at the counter, he asked my request.
"Two vests, Large and small." The man nods, grabbing them for me and making sure I sign the paperwork for them before I leave. Danny was waiting for me right outside the door, and accepted both of the vests.
"You ready for your first raid Jett?"
"You do know that I've done this before right?" He laughs loudly, and nods his head, he walks around to the driver side of the car but I beat him to it.
"Nah-ah, I drive newbie." He says, attempting to step around me. I hand him Kenai's leash and in one movement open the car door, step in and slam it shut before he even knows what happened. He glares at me through the window, before walking around and letting Kenai in the back row of the car. When he climbs in the passenger seat and shuts the door behind I'm off before he even gets the chance to buckle up. Danny grunts as he moves with the car, quickly buckling himself.
"Where are the bloody lights?" I mutter, pushing buttons on the dashboard as I went. Danny reaches over and flips a switch, the normal red and blue lights begin to flash as I hit another turn a lot faster than I should've. "Right. Thank you."
The tires squeal as I hit another turn, and Danny grunts again. "I should've driven." He groans out, bracing himself on the dashboard.
"Don't get your knickers in a twist. I haven't driven a car in a while." My eyes were focused on the road, but I could see Danny look at me in shock.
"How long is a while?" He sounded afraid of the answer, but I just laughed as I swung around another turn.
"Ooh, probably five or six years." Danny didn't have enough time to respond because I suddenly hit the breaks, slowing down by at least fifty miles per hour. I slow to a stop a block from the house, and pull over to the side of the roadway.
"Alright then." I sigh, drumming on the steering wheel for a second before popping my door open. Danny follows, and I let Kenai out the back. A few more vehicles come to a halt around us, dozens of officers clamor out of the cars all decked to the nines in body armor and protective gear. Danny tosses me a vest and I pull it on easily, clipping it closed on the sides and rolling my shoulders to let it adjust. I check Kenai's vest before un-clipping her and telling her to stick by my side.
"Six years really?" He mutters, pulling his gun from his holster and walking towards the building. I shrug.
"Give or take a few years." I follow suit, the gun is lighter in my hand this time, as if I am more sure carrying it. I stand directly behind Danny as we line up by the door, he looks over his shoulder and I nod. He taps the man in front of him and we are a go.
