I just had to wait a little longer, and... now!
Springing from the bush I was crouching in and ignoring the branches lightly scratching across my face and arms, I wrapped my arms as quickly as I could around my target. I rolled out of my attack, grinning widely as I held my prize up in my arms, "Caught you Tora!"
"You didn't follow the plan." Sasuke poked his head from the bush opposite our little clearing, face full of exasperated annoyance.
I simply snuggled the squirming feline against my face, "But we caught him, right? And now the mission's over!"
Sasuke frown only deepened, and he fully exited the bush, "It probably would have also worked if you followed the plan."
"Naw," I held my fingers up to my temple 'Shawn Spencer style' with a smirk, "I saw that this was the best way to do it."
"That joke's stupid." Sasuke shoved his hands in his pockets, now wholly unimpressed, "Stop doing it."
"Stop being such a downer!" Naruto burst from his bush and ran over to me, crouching down to examine the cat, which by now had calmed his squirming considerably in resignation, "We've got the cat and that's all that matters."
Sasuke obviously disagreed, but I piped up before he could argue anymore, "Yep! Mission's done!"
"Not until we deliver the cat home." Kakashi noted, strolling out of his hiding place and gazing down at us with his usual passivity.
Now Naruto's brow set in a frown, him turning to face Kakashi and folding his arms over his chest, "Sensei, I'm tired of all the baby missions!" He asserted confidently, pointing up at him, "We're ready for a C rank!"
"Oh, are you now?" Kakashi replied, quirking an amused eyebrow with an expression like he was placating a toddler.
Despite his earlier bad mood, Sasuke nodded, "I'm tired of all these fucking boring missions, we aren't incompetant you know."
Kakashi's expression morphed into momentary shock, staring at Sasuke for a moment before directing a scrutinizing glare my way, "You're a bad influence."
"I got him and Sasuke to work together, didn't I?" I pouted, resettling Tora in my arms as I pointedly turned from him, "Besides, don't you think they kinda have a point? You can only have us doing everybody's errands and chores for so long before we start to fall behind!"
"Fall behind!?" Naruto gasped, rounding on Kakashi again with renewed force, "You can't let us fall behind!"
Sasuke gave a firm nod, "I wonder what that says about your ability as a sensei."
Kakashi's brow lowered, gazing at us for a moment before he sighed, and his eyes lowered to the ground in defeat, "I have a trio of little assholes in my care, don't I." Raising his eyes back to us, he gave a shrug, "If you are all so decided, let's see if the Hokage had any opinions on the matter."
"Alright!" I cheered with Naruto, jumping up and holding the now very startled cat over my head.
And our excitement didn't quite simmer down the whole walk to return the cat to his happy owner, or when we at last reached the Hokage's office to receive that fated 'C rank' mission.
Kakashi placed a hand against the doors, frowning down at us, "Behave. Understand."
Naruto and I nodded excitedly, Sasuke electing to just huff out his acknowledgement, and Kakashi took that as a good enough response, pushing open the doors to the office and revealing Lord Third sitting serenely at his desk, pipe in his mouth and a book in his hands.
