Not allowing myself to hesitate a moment longer, I plucked a final sealing book from the shelf and perched it atop the precarious pile that was unsteadily nestled in my arm, "Coming down!"
Naruto held his hands out in anticipation of a fall as I carefully descended the step ladder, and I took the opportunity to place the stack in his awaiting hands. He made a little huffing noise as he attempted to accustom the new weight, "Geez, what's with all the books?"
I smiled as he poked his cute little face from around the pile, leaning over to be in better view, "I'm going to be a Fūinjutsu master!" I retook the sealing guide in my hand with a flourish, "I've got to study up! But don't think you're getting off the hook either!"
Although his brow creased at the idea of having to read anything from the bundle in his arms, he didn't object yet, "Sealing? Since when were you into that?" I guess it was kind of a random fixation that didn't have any basis in Sakura's character from the academy. Then again, it's not like 'interests' or anything like that were really well developed in anyone in the show.
But I'd offer him an explanation anyways, "I was looking through some jutsu guides and thought it sounded pretty cool. You can do a lot of stuff with seals." And that was an understatement, their abilities were practically broken since they were so poorly defined, and I was absolutely going to take advantage of that.
His brow furrowed further, and he gave the stack another scrutinizing look, "But what does that have to do with me?"
"We're gonna make you all smart and stuff!" I gushed, picking off another book, "You're going to read on all sorts of techniques and become super awesome!"
"Do... you really think I can be smart?" He seemed genuinely uncertain, which almost was odd to me because I wouldn't have expected him to admit he wasn't the smartest guy. Did that mean he trusted me? Whatever the case, poor boy clearly needed some support.
I ruffled his hair, "You already are, Ru! You've got a great brain in there!" He did though, I knew he had the ability to come up with some good ways to fool an enemy, "You just gotta learn how to use it!"
With my direction he began to move towards the nearest table, setting the books down and folding his arms on top of them, "Yeah?"
"Of course!" I held out the smaller book in my hand out to him, and, although he pulled a face, he accepted it. His grimace only worsened at seeing it was on chakra control, "Trust me, Ru, it'll be worth it to try. I'll even give you a hug if you finish a chapter!"
"Really?" He looked up hopefully, dropping his gaze back down the book in contemplation.
I held up my right hand in oath as I took my seat, "Promise."
He nodded, sitting himself and opening the book, but something in his eyes told me there was a lot more on his mind than his distaste for reading and love of hugs. But, before I could ask him about it, he lowered the book after what couldn't have been more than a couple of sentences, "I don't feel very smart right now."
I gave my own guide a scan, feeling... kinda the same way looking at all of the wholly unfamiliar, sciencey concepts and lingo, "Why?"
"I didn't want to hurt Hinata." I wasn't expecting that. Quickly ignoring my book, I dropped it to the table to give Naruto my full attention, noting that he was genuinely remorseful, "Do you think she's okay?"
"If you're upset about what everyone else said, they're just mean." I huffed, and I wasn't wrong, "And you just bumped her, she isn't going to shatter or anything." Although the social awkwardness of the situation might've broken her now that I thought about it. He didn't look convinced though, lowering his eyes back to his novel sadly, and I sighed, "Hey, I'm probably going to be seeing her later today. I'll apologize for you, alright? It was my fault too, and I can let you know if she's okay or not, but I'm sure she's not mad at you."
