Three weeks had passed since Thanksgiving Break, and everyone was already getting ready to go home for Christmas. Dahlia was sitting Indian-style on Jordan's bed, watching as he typed on his laptop, sitting at his desk."So, you wanna start our game now, or wait until midnight?"
Jordan's focus stayed on the lit-up screen as his fingers clicked away.
"What game?"
The smile on Dahlia's face instantly fell, and she felt cold.
Every year on the 22nd, they'd start their little guessing game. Each day they'd give the other a hint about one of their gifts and they'd play 20 questions until midnight at Christmas when they'd open their gifts.
They'd played since they were twelve and Dahlia couldn't believe it.
He forgot.
After a few moments, Dahlia started to think about the past few weeks and instead of feeling sad, she felt annoyed.
"Seriously Jordan?! The game we've played at Christmas since we were kids-- you just forgot?"
Jordan looked over at her for a moment before looking back down at his lap, sinking into his chair as his voice came out just over a whisper.
"I'm sorry."
"Where's your head at? I mean... it feels like you're not even here with me anymore."
"Dahlia, I'm sorry--"
"See?! That too! You- you stopped calling me Doll. I just... what'd I do?"
Jordan looked up at Dahlia and clenched his jaw, knowing the next words would both shatter her and destroy them. A single tear rolled down his cheek before he whispered again, effectively throwing Dahlia's heart in a meat grinder.
"I kissed someone."
