"Are you sure you don't want me to stay tonight and just take you to the airport in the morning? It's no big deal."
Dahlia smiled and shook her head.
"Kat, it's okay. I can grab an Uber in the morning. And besides, we both know your mom is gonna be waiting for you in your driveway in about... ten minutes ago."
Kat smirked and rolled her eyes, knowing Dahlia was spot on.
"Alright. Guess I'll see you next Sunday."
The girls hugged and as Kat walked to their front door, duffle bag in hand, Dahlia reached out and smacked her on the butt.
"Oooooh! Damn it, Winters."
"Definitely gonna miss that ass. See you next Sunday, Kit-Kat."
The moment she was alone, Dahlia plopped on her bed, thinking back to her conversation with Jordan just over an hour ago. As she clutched the necklace from his mom, she got an idea.
A second later, she was sitting at her desk in front of her laptop, waiting for the call to be picked up.
"Lia?! Oh, Sweetheart, how are you?"
Dahlia smiled at the warm welcome she received from Jordan's mom, and as she sat back in her chair she began to fiddle with the new piece of jewelry around her neck.
"Hey, Mom. I'm- I'm okay."
"Well, we sure have missed you, around here. How's school treating you?"
"Everything's fine, my classes are okay... I was uh-- I actually wanted to call to thank you for my birthday present."
"Your wha--oh, oh, yeah! I'm just glad you like it."
"Jordan brought it by earlier, I love it."
Jordan's mom let out a small breath of relief, thankful that Dahlia didn't catch her when she stammered or the falter in her voice.
"Mom... can I ask you something?"
"Of course, Sweetheart. You can ask me anything."
Dahlia looked down and bit her lip, trying to carefully word her question out in her head. Sure, Jordan's mom cared about her, but Dahlia knew no one would ever mean to her what her son did. She didn't want to badmouth him to his mom, even if he deserved it.
"If you were me or-- or if Randy did what Jordan did... would you be able to forgive him?"
Dahlia saw as Jordan's mom sighed and looked away, and suddenly she wished she could go back and just call her instead.
"Oh, Honey... you two have been together for...damn near your whole lives. You guys were great together, but I know how bad he hurt you, and it's okay to still be feeling like that."
"Do you think we should get back together?"
"Dahlia, don't worry about that right now, worry about making sure you're okay, okay? You're both so young and you've got your entire lives ahead of you."
