"Tell me again what I am supposed to do at this event?" I asked my Aunt Charlotte, the Queen.

"You, are to find a suitable man to be your husband."

"This again? I told you that I'm taking a break so I can go and travel the world."

"Nonsense. You will go out and find a man tonight or  I'll banish you."

I smiled. "Really? How many times do you think that's going to work on me? You wouldn't actually ban me and you know it."

She gave a small smile, which was rare. "Okay. You don't have to go up to them, but if they come up to you-"

"I'll politely talk to them and then dismiss myself."

"Or-"

"No or's. I'm not ready. I'm not in love."

She groaned and then left my room.

I put on my prettiest blue dress and had my ladies maid do my hair. It was mostly left down except for one small bunch that was braided.

We arrived at the ball and got introduced.

"Princess y/n, of Prussia." I put on my smile and walked into the room. My eyes scanned over everybody, looking for anyone I might recognize.

I kept walking to the side and greeting people. It was definitely going to be an exhausting night.

a couple hours later, I was starting to have a hard time breathing.

I needed some fresh air, away from all these people.

I stepped out into the garden taking deep breaths in and out. It is quite warm outside given how late it is.

"Miss, uh, I saw you inside and you looked like you needed help. Are you okay?" I heard a man ask.

"I'm fine. Thank you."

I instantly dropped to the ground and clutched my chest.

"Oh god, uh-" the man kneeled down and started undoing the back of my dress.

"Sorry it's taking so long, my eyes are closed and I've never done this before-"

"Open your eyes!"

"Oh god." He quickly undid my dress and ripped the back of my corset off, causing me instant relief.

I held the corset and my dress to my chest and stood up.

"Thank you. What's your name?" I asked.

"Y-you're princess y/n!" He bowed. "My name is Colin Bridgerton."

"Colin Bridgerton. Such a lovely name." I gave him a small smile. "Would you be so kind to help me tie my dress back up?" I chuckled.

"Of course, m'lady."

"Colin you saved my life. Such formalities are not needed. Call me y/n."

As he tied up the last ribbon in the back of my gown, his hands grazed against my shoulders. It was electrifying.

"Y/n, it was an honor saving your life." He kissed my hand while making eye contact. "Are you feeling up for a dance?"

"I believe I at least owe you that." I smiled again.

We went inside and danced hand in hand while talking about what we want for the future.

"I plan on going to Greece once the season is over. I want to travel the world."

"So do I. My aunt is dead set on me finding a suitable husband though. I told her I'm not ready."

"She can't make you wed, can she?"

"No, of course not. I'm just worried that if I wait too long-"

"You won't find anybody?"

"Yeah. And if I do end up finding somebody/"

"Will they love you for who you are or just for the money and title."

"Exactly. You understand. Guys usually don't understand."

"We won't ever admit it, but guys think about it just as much as girls do. We wonder what our future wife is going to look like and what her favorite flowers are."

"Her favorite flowers?" I asked with a smile.

He nodded. "What are your favorite flowers, y/n."

"Lilac. It's said that purple lilacs symbolize the first emotions of love, while the white lilacs symbolize innocence and humility."

For a moment we just danced and couldn't keep our eyes off each other.

When it was time to leave, I made sure to tell Colin goodnight. I saw him talking to his two older brothers, so I began walking over.

"Miss y/l/n, to what do we owe the pleasure." The oldest asked as they all three bowed.

"I just wanted to wish Colin a goodnight and thank him again for saving my life tonight. I am very truly grateful." I smiled at him shyly.

"Goodnight y/n, would you like me to walk you to your carriage?" He offered politely.

"No, it's okay. I can do perfectly well on my own." I nodded while still smiling.

I bowed to them before walking away. Hearing one of his brothers say "She absolutely fancies you."

I giggled and went home with my aunt.

"Auntie. What if I told you I had met a guy tonight."

"Who is he? I didn't see you dancing."

"We danced forever. It was splendid. He wants to travel too, and he's going to Greece when the season is over." I sighed dreamily. "He's perfect. So kind and helpful and understanding." I couldn't stop smiling thinking about him.

"And does this gentleman have a name?"

"Colin Bridgerton." I smiled at her.

"One of the Bridgerton girl's brothers? Which one is he?"

"He is the third son."

"Third son seems far away from the title of Viscount. Be sure he isn't using you for your title dear. Men will steal from a woman and claim it as theirs in a heartbeat."

"He isn't using me. We aren't even courted yet. I just find him... tolerable." I tried concealing my smile with failed attempts. "Tomorrow I'm going into town to see if I can find him or one of his siblings. I must see him again."
