Today was Daddy's season opener, and as Mommy held me in her arms on the sideline, a bunch of people took pictures of us in our matching #8 jerseys."Mommy, look! He's right there!"
I pointed my finger out onto the field at Daddy, who had just thrown a practice toss.
"Daddy!!!"
My voice must've been able to cut through all the noise because a moment later he looked over at me and Mommy.
We did our secret salute and he blew me and Mommy a kiss, causing the flashes from the cameras to intensify.
I caught Daddy's kiss and curled into Mommy's arms, causing the crowd of reporters and photographers to collectively let out an 'awww'.
A moment or so later, Mommy shifted me onto her other hip, groaning as she moved me.
"Alright, Sunny Bunny, Mommy loves you and all, but you might be getting too big for me to hold you."
My eyes widened and my bottom lip popped out when I looked at Mommy.
As their only child, I knew my parents would go above and beyond to do whatever they could for me, and I appreciated that fact. I just hated that I wouldn't be their baby anymore.
"But... but, nooo, Mommy. I'm not too big. You can always hold me."
She began to laugh, saying something about how I don't have to worry because Daddy was never going to let me go.
I could barely hear her though. I had just seen the person I'd been hoping to see all day and I wanted to get his attention.
"Nate!"
I know he heard me because he saw me, but instead of coming over, he ran away. A second later he was followed down the sideline by two other boys, both a little bigger than him.
"Mommy... ugh... put me down!"
I whined and wriggled in Mommy's arms until she finally set me down. Once on my feet, I ran towards where I had seen Nate go, down the sideline, near the warm-up bike machines.
One of the boys had just pushed Nate down and I stormed over, seeing red.
"Hey! Leave him alone!"
Both boys turned to see me coming over, laughing with each other as I ran past them over to Nate.
"Awwww, is that your girlfriend?"
Nate's lip trembled as he stood, yanking his hand out of mine as he glared at the two boys with tears in his eyes.
"Shut up!"
One of the boys shoved Nate back and the other had just turned toward me with a weird look on his face when a voice boomed from behind us.
"Hey! Leave my brother alone!"
Tristan's blue eyes were glued on me for a second before he stomped over, standing between Nate and me and the bullies.
The two boys nearly knocked each other over as they scattered away, too cowardly to even look back as they scampered off.
"Thanks, Tristan."
Nate's weak voice made Tristan turn back around. Looking past my shoulder for a moment, Tristan's eyes were on his brother before they landed back on me.
He bit his lip and nodded before walking away, leaving both Nate and I standing there confused.
I'd never seen Tristan look out for Nate and I wasn't sure what made him do it this time.
