Every year, right after school ends, at the start of summer break, my parents let me and Tristan have a sleepover and we each are allowed to invite two friends. The only exception was Sunny, who's had her own room in our house since we moved in.
She was the daughter my parents never had and she was always welcomed at our house.
My friends were arriving in just a little while, and Sunny and I were sitting on the couch watching tv, when Tristan and his friends came barreling in, having just finished skating.
He took the seat on the other side of Sunny and pulled her in, wrapping his arm around her.
"Hey, Bun. Miss me?"
She rolled her eyes and gently shoved him, and the next thing I knew his lips were on her cheek. I shot up from the couch, sitting straight up before turning to glare at Tristan.
"Dude! Back up, you're smothering her!"
Tristan smirked and pulled Sunny closer, making my blood boil. All I wanted was to get her away from him as fast as I could.
"Chill, Nathaniel. Bunni's good, aren't you?"
Before Sunny could say anything, I cut her off.
"Flower's my guest."
"Not tonight, little brother."
The room was silent for a moment; with the way Tristan and I were glaring at each other, nobody knew what to say.
The tension-filled room finally found its relief when Tristan's mom walked in.
"Alright, boys, go wash up. The pizza is on its way and, Nate— your friends are pulling up right now."
My eyes were on Tristan's back, trying to burn a hole into him as he walked away when I felt Sunny tug on my arm.
"Hey, be nice, okay?"
I rolled my eyes and turned to head towards the front door with Sunny following closely behind.
"Why should I? He's always a jerk and he's always trying to take you from me."
I was jerked back when Sunny yanked on my arm. Her eyebrows were knit together as she shook her head.
"How could he take me from you? You're both my friends."
