I knocked on the door after taking a deep breath. Even though I knew this was a bad idea, it was the last idea that I could think of.

I had been racking my brain the past two weeks trying to think of the perfect gift for Sunny's birthday.

She was turning ten in just a week and I still hadn't found the perfect gift; I was running out of time.

"Who is it?"

"Uhh... Tristan? It's- it's Nate."

"..."

"Tristan?"

"What do you want?"

Taking another deep breath, I somehow mustered the courage to ask my brother the question I had been wanting to all day... almost.

"I was wondering if you... can you open the door?"

It took him a few seconds, but eventually, Tristan opened the door, rolling his eyes as he did.

"What?"

I knew coming to him was stupid, and now, standing in his open doorway, all I wanted to do was turn and run back to my room.

"So are you just gonna stand there? I've got a videogame I'd like to get back to."

After taking a deep breath, I nodded to myself.

"I was wondering... if, uh, if-if-if--"

"If what?!"

Tristan yelled so hard I hopped back a bit in fear.

"What should I get Sunny for her birthday? It's in two weeks and Dad said he'd take me to the mall tomorrow."

His face had softened for a moment when I said Sunny's name, so I thought it was my opening.

Maybe we'd finally get along.

My hope was only for a moment since Tristan destroyed it once he opened his mouth.

"Go ask my mom for help or something. How would I know what your stupid little girlfriend even likes?!"

"But... you-you guys are close."

He rolled his eyes and shook his head before glaring at me, making me feel two feet tall.

"Not as close as you two. Now, leave me alone!"

The door was shut in my face moments later, and as I walked by to my room, all I could think about was how I knew asking Tristan was pointless.
